Joe grew up in the Chicago area. In 1971, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Fuchu, Japan. During his time there, he fell in love with the culture and the mountains of Japan. In 1973, Joe met Michiko, and the two married in 1974, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, adventure, and family.

Together they raised two children, Scott and Lena, whom Joe adored. Later in life, he adopted his grandchild, Kayla, and proudly raised her as his own daughter. Family was at the center of Joe’s life, and he found great joy in supporting, guiding, and spending time with those he loved most.

Joe earned a bachelor’s degree in English as well as an associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He went on to build a successful career as an electrical and quality engineer, working for Omron Electric and later Northrop Grumman. He was respected by colleagues for his dedication, strong work ethic, and thoughtful approach to solving problems.

Joe had a deep passion for nature and the outdoors. He cherished family vacations to Colorado and Utah, where he introduced his family to adventures such as hiking, horseback riding, mountain climbing, and whitewater rafting. These trips created lifelong memories and fostered a shared love of the outdoors within his family.

An avid runner, Joe completed six marathons and countless half marathons. Running was both a personal challenge and a source of peace for him, allowing him to spend time outdoors and stay connected to the natural world he loved so much.

Joe also devoted significant time to environmental stewardship. He was actively involved in native plant restoration efforts in Cook County, Illinois, and Dane County, Wisconsin. Through volunteer work and community involvement, he helped restore natural habitats and shared his appreciation for native landscapes with others.

Joe will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his love of nature, and his deep devotion to his family. He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, kindness, and respect for the natural world.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Michiko; his child, Scott; his granddaughter, Kayla; and his sister Janice. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Instead of flowers, the family encourages those who wish to honor Joe’s memory to consider supporting local conservation efforts or native plant restoration organizations, continuing the work that meant so much to him.
