On December 3, 2024, Joseph Donald Lugiano, Sr., (81) passed away at home in Apex, NC. Memorial arrangements have been made for Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 1:00 PM. The service will be held at Kirk of Kildaire. The service will also be viewable online via the link on the Kirk of Kildaire's website. The family invites all who can attend to a simple dessert fellowship at the church immediately following the service.
Born December 11, 1942, Joe is survived by his wife, Hannah Mary; son, Joseph D., Jr. and wife, Patty; son, John David and wife, Suzy; daughter, Kathryn and husband, Larry. He is also survived by his 16 grandchildren and his 8 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his four brothers- Frank (Bud), Ronald, Richard (Rick), and William (Bill), nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sadly, Joe was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Frank and Dorothy, and his younger brother, Robert, younger sister, Judy, and his sister-in-law, Deborah.
Joe was a devout Christian, a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend to many. He was a wearer of many hats. Joe was an avid runner and photographer. He spent endless hours enjoying volunteering on church projects at the Kirk of Kildaire and tending to the trails he so loved to traverse on his runs at Umstead Park. He spent hours cleaning and restoring trails and cabins at the park and working with anyone who needed his many talents. He was never one to turn away a request for help. Joe was more than happy to share his time with anyone who needed him.
Well-loved by his family, fellow parishioners, friends, runners, colleagues, and neighbors. He was a mentor to the youth of his community and family. He will be missed by so many.

So many great memories of running with Joe, especially back in the day at Umstead. And so many unexpected uplifting conversations when we would randomly bump into each other. He was always so kind, easy to talk to, and encouraging. Joe was one of the main reasons why I got into ultrarunning. Very grateful for that. He will be missed!

Joe was my coach for over 30 years. I am second from the left in the picture. I could write a book about him and his qualities as a person. He was a mentor and what I know about the sport came from him. I have many fond memories that I will carry the rest of my life. Joe made an impact on and off the track. To Hannah, you and the family will ALWAYS be in my prayers. I want to thank you for sharing him. The running community has lost one of the greats. He got me through my first 50 miler but he failed to tell me about all the large rocks. He only smiled after I got back in. Then again, that was Joe. I will miss him but his teachings will last a lifetime. May God continue to look over the family. George Banker
