So many great memories of running with Joe, especially back in the day at Umstead. And so many unexpected uplifting conversations when we would randomly bump into each other. He was always so kind, easy to talk to, and encouraging. Joe was one of the main reasons why I got into ultrarunning. Very grateful for that. He will be missed!

Joe was my coach for over 30 years. I am second from the left in the picture. I could write a book about him and his qualities as a person. He was a mentor and what I know about the sport came from him. I have many fond memories that I will carry the rest of my life. Joe made an impact on and off the track. To Hannah, you and the family will ALWAYS be in my prayers. I want to thank you for sharing him. The running community has lost one of the greats. He got me through my first 50 miler but he failed to tell me about all the large rocks. He only smiled after I got back in. Then again, that was Joe. I will miss him but his teachings will last a lifetime. May God continue to look over the family. George Banker

Joe was a warm and caring person with a sense of humor. While at the Kirk I enjoyed the conversations we had. What a positive impact on his community. Peace and comfort to you Hannah as you create new routines. Angela Farthing

Hannah, my heart aches for you....Joe was a wonderful friend to everyone he met. I have so many good memories of his working on the Umstead 100 race...and you were usually right there with him.....working many hours to make it a success. I am praying for you and all of your sweet family.
