Joseph Maciejewski Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 11, 2025.
Joseph Peter Maciejewski, 91, of Champion, OH, was greeted by the angels on Sunday, November 9, 2025. A man of great faith, he left this world watching Mass surrounded by his devoted family, having seen his beloved Notre Dame defeat Navy the prior evening.

Joe was born January 31, 1934, in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, to the late Jan and Janina Maciejewski. He grew up on a large farm in Transfer, Pennsylvania, as one of nine siblings. Farming gave Joe a work ethic and love of the land that followed him throughout his life. While Chester, Vera, Ann, Stanley, Theresa and Eleanor have passed on, his brothers John and Henry are still with us.

At an early age, Joe displayed a talent for music. He taught himself to play many instruments and became a "go-to" local musician. After graduating from Hickory High School, he enlisted in the Army, where his musical talents were often utilized to entertain visiting dignitaries.

He attended Youngstown State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts from the Dana School of Music. He later earned a Master's Degree from Westminster College. After a stint at Windham High School, Joe spent 30 years with the Bloomfield-Mespo School District. "Mr. Mo" expanded the school's drama department, directing and producing 24 stage musicals. He loved teaching, patiently helping countless students unlock their potential through the performing arts.

Joe was an organist and music director for many years at several churches in the Diocese of Youngstown. He also played accordion and keyboard for his brother's band, The Stan Macey Orchestra.

In addition to his brothers, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia (Gedeon); his daughter, Rose (Greg) Farley, and three grandchildren, Magnolia, Westley, and Eowyn.

Joe was a true original - a quiet man with a heart of gold, always seeking to help those less fortunate than himself without fanfare or judgement, usually incorporating music along the way. To honor his memory, plant a vegetable, listen to classical music, and support your local school's performing arts program.

Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to Our Lady Star of the Sea School Musical Drama Department at 467 Fairford Rd, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Columba Cathedral on Friday, November 14, at 10 a.m.

Rose, Pat, and family,
I am deeply saddened to hear this news. Mr. Maciejewski was such an instrumental part of my youth and one of the most influential people in my life. During one of my lowest moments, when I had lost faith in myself, he still believed in me. When it felt like everyone else had given up, he saw potential and possibility. His mentorship shaped the person I became. I truly don´t think I would be where I am today without his guidance, encouragement, and kindness.

We stayed in touch throughout the years, and I hope he knew just how profoundly he impacted my life and the lives of so many others. He gave me a gift that will last forever: the gift of music, and the confidence to believe in myself again. His legacy will live on in every note, every song, and every student he inspired. Prayers for all of you.

Dearest Pat, Rose, and Family ... I am so profoundly saddened to see this news. If we are fortunate in this life, we grow old. But sadness eventually happens when we lose friends we thought the world of. I considered Joe one of those friends for every day since I met him in August, 1970. He was the first teacher to extend a hand and welcome this young punk kid to Bloomfield High School. He asked for my help with 'South Pacific" that year. He asked me to take care of tickets and MC duties for many years during so many other Broadway caliber productions. As a teacher on my staff years later, he was one of my staff anchors, and never, ever disappointed me. He was a stellar man, a better human being, and those who knew him are better because of it. I offer you my infinite respect, sorrow, and condolensces on the loss of your husband, father, grandfather ... and on the loss of my friend of a half century.
