Joseph Anthony Martini, 69, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, passed away on August 10 after suffering a fatal
cardiac arrest. He had been enjoying a morning swim at his favorite place, the beach, with his favorite
person, his life partner and husband of 32 years, Anthony Carrabino.
Joe was born in Springfield, the second child of Mary (Lucerino) and Marino Martini. He earned a B.S.
degree in biology from Assumption University and embarked on a successful career as an administrator
with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Hebrew SeniorLife, and other health care
organizations. His work took him to New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, but Greater Boston was his
longtime home. Nine years ago, Joe and Anthony purchased a vacation condominium in Fort Lauderdale
and moved there permanently in 2020.
Joe dove into leadership roles at school, work, and charitable endeavors, most recently heading the
condo board at his new home. He had a charismatic, welcoming presence and a generosity of spirit. Joe
was a terrific host, inviting friends and family to pool parties and days on the water in his succession of
boats, and always serving delicious food he prepared in his Italian kitchen. He was someone who could
be counted on to truly "have your back." With his extensive knowledge of medicine and the workings of
the health care industry, he many times stepped into stressful medical situations on his friends' behalf,
bringing them clarity and greater peace of mind.
Joe, with Anthony, travelled extensively, returning repeatedly to Sicily, his ancestral home. He further
explored Europe and islands around the world on recent cruises. He relished good food and lively
company; museums, film, and the arts in all forms; a tough racquet ball competitor; and being out on
the open sea in his and Anthony's boats, Knot-A-Clue, I – III. To Joe, we send this parting wish, from the
Seaman's Prayer, " even in the storm, grant that there may be peace and calm within (y)our heart."
Joe leaves his adoring husband Anthony Carrabino; his brothers Jeffrey, wife Sue, and son Christian and
James and wife Marie; his sister Barbara Jean (Bunny) and sons Vincent and Anthony, and many uncles,
aunts, and cousins. A Celebration of Life will be held in Florida in the coming weeks.

Joe was a manager at the insurance company we worked for. We built a rapport and began sharing lunch together, sometimes via video call where I'd screen share the latest Late Show monologue for us to watch.
Joe became a dear friend and remained one once our employment together had ended. He always was a source for advise and/or support.

Joe and I acted as job references for each other, not long before his passing, which resulted in both of us being hired for the positions.
He would send my reference email the week before leaving us.
I'd later have his reference letter forwarded to my email (thank you Anthony), which painted a positive picture of my work ethic. I feel fortunate to have acquired it and will remain a file saved.

We lost quite a kindred spirit, and one sharp dresser. You're greatly missed.

Joe was a colleague for many years. My favorite memory is going out on his boat in Boston Harbor. He was such a gentleman and wonderful person. My condolences to Anthony and all who knew Joe.

On a boat on a lake in New Hampshire in 1985! At the time, I had not a clue that there'd be Knot A Clue!

I sat next to Joe in homeroom at Cathedral High School in Springfield, Massachusetts. I haven´t seen him since we graduated in 1973 but all of the wonderful things said about him in his obituary and in comments to it were evident back in high school. He was fun loving, generous and very engaging - a great person to be around in high school! My sympathies to his husband and family. May he rest in peace.
