Joseph Matteson Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Joseph "Joe" E. Matteson, 77, of Montgomery, Indiana passed away on Monday September 22, 2025, at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper, Indiana.

He was born on July 31, 1948, in Washington, Indiana to Noble and Nora (McCrary) Matteson.

He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was known for his quick wit, good-hearted nature, and willingness to help anyone in need. Joe touched countless lives with his kindness and his sense of humor.

Joe's faith was central to his life. He loved the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a devoted member of Trinity Gospel Tabernacle in Washington. He found joy in reading his Bible and sharing his faith through the way he lived-always with love, laughter, and compassion.

Throughout his working years, Joe was a talented painter at Charlie Rose Construction and worked at McCord's and later served faithfully as a maintenance worker for the Washington Housing Authority. No matter the task, Joe worked hard and took pride in doing things well.

Sports were another great passion in his life. Joe cheered on the St. Louis Cardinals, the Indiana Pacers, and the IU Hoosiers. He also gave back to the community by playing softball for McCord's and coaching youth baseball for many years, teaching not only the game but also valuable lessons of teamwork, respect, and perseverance.

Joe also loved the outdoors, country music, and the simple joys of life.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of faith, humor, and love will continue to inspire those blessed to have shared in his life.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Barbara (Bob) Charles, Dave (Carol) Matteson, Dorothy Grannan, infants- Dana Louise, and Jesse Odell, and his nephew, Kevin Charles.

He is survived by his children, Jodi Lynn Graber and life partner Sean Sellars, Amy Denise Underwood, and Megan Brooke Doby, grandchildren, Brock Mitchell Graber, Garrett Randall Graber, Lexi Lenae Graber, Emily Dawn Underwood, Laban Alan Underwood, Joshua Andrew Underwood, Josiah Alexander Underwood, Alana Isabelle Martinez, Sophia Denae Martinez, Nolan Thomas Doby, great- granddaughter, Raegan Underwood, siblings, Lenora Sue (David) Ginergrich, Marty Lynn Matteson, nieces and nephews, Chris Clymer, Chad Clymer, Brett Matteson, Brandon Matteson, Brian Matteson, Cheryl Lynn (Kenny) Wright, Stan (Carolyn) Charles, Tracy Grannan, Karla McCraken, and many cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Friday September 26, 2025, at Trinity Gospel Tabernacle in Washington, Indiana with Rev. James Myers to officiate. Burial will follow in Aikman Creek Cemetery.

Friends may visit on Friday September 26, 2025, from 12:00 P.M until the time of service at 2:00 P.M at Trinity Gospel Tabernacle.
