Ilion - It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph (Joe) Edward McCarthy Jr., of Ilion, after suffering a severe stroke.

Joe was born on June 24, 1955, in Lawton, Oklahoma, to Joseph and Gloria McCarthy. He graduated from Mount Markham Central School District in 1973. On July 17, 1981, Joe married the love of his life, Deborah (Vivyan) McCarthy, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Herkimer, NY. Joe and Deb shared 44 wonderful years of marriage and truly became each other's best friends. In their later years, they especially loved to travel, including a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Italy and Ireland. They also enjoyed road trips across the country, exploring national parks and landmarks together.

Over the course of his career, Joe held a variety of roles at Central Steel and Remington Arms, among other employers. He was known for his dedication, versatility, and strong work ethic. After retiring, Joe found fulfillment in volunteering with Hospice, and later spent his days caring for and cherishing time with his grandchildren, whom he absolutely adored.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah McCarthy; his son, Joseph McCarthy; his son and daughter-in-law, Kyle and Courtney McCarthy; and his beloved grandchildren, Sullivan and Ronan. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Lynne and Robert Burns; his sister-in-law, Susan Vivyan; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kevin and Terri Vivyan; his brother-in-law, Robin Vivyan; and his sister-in-law, Kelly Vivyan.

Joe leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he deeply loved: Rory Burns, Michele Hinkley (Chris), Jenn Vivyan, Sara Vivyan (Aaron), Krysten Dutch (Shane), Wes Vivyan, and Emily Vivyan (Graham). He also leaves great-nieces and nephews: Mark, Izzy, Grace, Vivy, Emilia, Scarlet, and Aaron.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria; his stepfather, Leon; his father, Joseph; his mother- and father-in-law, Margaret and Jim Vivyan; and his brother-in-law, Mark Vivyan.

In keeping with Joe's wishes, there will be no public funeral or calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St. Ilion, NY 13357.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice and Palliative Care, Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, or the American Red Cross.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the ICU staff and doctors at Bassett Healthcare for their compassion and dedication during this difficult time.

As a final thought, we encourage people to remember this: life is short, and tomorrow is never guaranteed. Live fully, don't sweat the small stuff, and spend time with the people who make your life better.

Joe will be forever missed and always remembered with love.
