Joseph L. McCarthy

Joseph L. McCarthy, 84, of Hamilton, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2015, at Compassionate Care Hospice at Saint Francis Medical Center, Trenton. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. McCarthy came to New Jersey as a child having lived in Somerset for many years. He moved to Hamilton in 2003. Mr. McCarthy was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean War on the USS Kearsarge. He went on to work as a civilian as Fire Station Chief at the Earle Naval Weapon Station in Wall Township. In addition to his service with the Navy he was a special police officer with the Franklin Township Police Department. He volunteered with the Millstone Valley Fire Company and served as Fire Chief. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. McCarthy belonged to the Warren County Rod and Gun Club, the Back Ants Hunting Club (for over 50 years) and was a former member of the Fire Chiefs Association. Predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Agnes McCarthy; his wife, Jean McCarthy; his son, Paul McCarthy; his grandson, Kevin McCarthy; his brother, Denis McCarthy; Mr. McCarthy is survived by his son, Ken and his wife, Linda; his daughters, Karen Chamberlin and her husband, David and Marion Knaus and her husband, Mark; his grandchildren, Erin, Kara, Jen, Allison, Joseph, and Katelyn; his sister, Marilyn Azzarita and her husband, Nick and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 20, 2015, at 12 p.m. at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, New Jersey. Interment will take place at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2015, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 -8 p.m. at the Saul Colonial Home.
