Joseph "Joel" "Joey" Morguess, 88, of Tamarac, Florida, died peacefully at home on October 12, 2025, spending his very last days and moments with close family.
He was born in the Bronx on April 11, 1937, to Stella and Maurice Morguess. He grew up on E. 166th Street, across the street from P.S. 90, where he attended elementary school and where, he would like you to know, he must have fielded a thousand ground balls playing baseball on the concrete playground while his mother watched from the window of their fourth-story apartment. Joe graduated from Taft High School in 1954. He graduated with a B.S. from City College of New York in 1958 where he majored in psychology, and in 1960 received his M.S. in Education in Clinical School Psychology. He then spent 34 years working in the New York City Public Schools, including 27 as a clinical school psychologist and retired in 1993. After retirement, Joe moved to Tamarac, Florida. He served as a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family and County Mediator, a member of the Broward County Consumer Protection Board, and as a popular columnist for the Tamarac and Coral Springs Forums, and later TamaracTalk and other local publications. An active member of the Kings Point Community, he hosted a current events group and was a founding member of the Democratic Club.
Joe was a Yankees fan, and throughout most of his life he enjoyed and excelled at baseball, softball, tennis, bowling, and ping-pong. His heroes were Mickey Mantle, Muhammed Ali, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and lately, Jon Stewart. He loved to sing and dance. Most of all, Joe was vibrant, warm and kind, loved people, and had a way of making those around him feel good about themselves.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Beatrice Fuchs and Ruth Edelman, whom he loved dearly. He is survived by his children Audrey and Michael (Lisa), and nine grandchildren; five nieces; and further survived by other relatives and friends.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the caring nurses, certified nursing assistants, doctors, and staff of VITAS Healthcare who provided in-home hospice care to their father. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to VITAS Healthcare.
Funeral services will be held Friday October 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Alexander-Levitt Funeral Home, 8135 W. McNab Rd., Tamarac, Florida, to be followed immediately by a Celebration of Life.
