Joseph Walker Myers departed this life just after midnight on May 3, 2023, at the home of his parents in Marietta, Georgia after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. He was 49 years old.
Joe was born at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on February 17, 1974, the son of Joseph Palme Myers and Valerie (Walker) Myers. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister Kristen Myers-Fox and her husband Geoff of Wesley Chapel, Florida; nephews Christopher Eric Fox and Adam Elliot Fox; his Uncle Robert Nash Myers and Aunt Leslie of San Diego; cousins Julia Lee (James) Duran currently of Jamestown, North Carolina, and Elizabeth (James) Castor of Harrisburg, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his grandparents James Edward Walker, Jr., Ruth Howren Walker, Joseph Nash Myers and Winifred Palme Myers, and by his Aunt June (Myers) James who had passed away just 18 days prior.
While his earliest years were lived in Doraville, Georgia, Plymouth, Massachusetts, Roswell, Georgia and Sandy Springs, Georgia, most of Joe's growing up years were in East Cobb/Marietta, Georgia where he attended Murdock Elementary, Dodgen Middle School and Pope High School, graduating in 1992. He attended Southern Tech studying Electrical Engineering. After three years he decided he had had enough Math and transferred to Georgia State in Atlanta, switching his major to Philosophy with a minor in Film History.
Growing up an avid music and film fan, Joe learned to play the guitar in his high school years, became a college music DJ at WGHR in Atlanta for 3 years (1993-1996), serving as Alternative Music Director for a year. His show "OK, Whatever" included a diverse and deep selection of music along with on-air antics and performances with his friends who stopped by. During that time, Joseph also worked as a projectionist at a local 8-plex theater for over 3 years (1992-1995). Also during this same time, Joseph formed the seminal underground Emo Hardcore Punk band, Inkwell, with some friends. Between 1994 and 1996, Inkwell toured various parts of the U.S. playing with many of the bands that helped define that era of the DIY music scene. After Inkwell, Joseph played in several other musical acts in Atlanta including Remodel, doom metal band Black Venus, and Ten O'clock Owls. In 2013 he moved to Los Angeles where he worked for five years at Legendary Entertainment, most recently as a features Postproduction Coordinator. On screen film credits include Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), Skyscraper (2018), Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019) and Pokemon Detective Pikachu (2019).
What Joe treasured most in life were his friendships and his family, and his greatest legacy is the positive impact he had on the lives of those who knew him and the memories he made with them. Throughout his life, wherever he went he wasted no time in finding and forming friendships. At their requests, Joe got his credentials and performed wedding ceremonies for two of his close friends. Many of his friends have expressed their admiration of, in their words, his unique perspective on life, his calm and friendly demeanor, artistic gifts, positive spirit, individuality, creative energy, great sense of humor, humility, mettle (and metal!), and the gentle and kind friendship he projected even during chaos and difficult times. His family knew him for his adventurous spirit, enthusiasm, fearlessness in taking on any carnival ride, insightful, sharp wit, and thoughtful giving nature. In conversation he shared his deep knowledge about music, movies, life and the world and universe around him.
During his final years and in his final days, Joe bravely brought comfort to those close to him, sharing that he was at peace with his fate because of the fullness of his life from the love and experiences with friends and family. As Joe would always say, "Good times."
