Joseph “Joe” John Okapal, age 67, resident of Broken Arrow, OK, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at his home in Broken Arrow, OK. Joe was born on December 14, 1958, in Oregon, OH, to Joseph John Okapal and Hedviga Mary Ann Okapal.
Joe grew up in Ohio and graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1976. He later attended The University of Oklahoma, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Leadership.
On February 15, 1980, Joe was united in marriage to Margo Lynne Updegraff in Ohio. They shared many years together, building a life centered on family, service, and community.
Joe dedicated his career to serving children and families. He worked as an Operations Director for Head Start and CAP Head Start, as well as CDI, within the field of early childhood education. Throughout his career, he was deeply committed to helping make children’s lives safe, secure, and filled with opportunity. He also worked closely with libraries in both Toledo, OH, and Broken Arrow, OK, believing strongly in literacy and access to education. Joe felt it was important to nourish children not only physically, but intellectually and emotionally as well.
Joe loved stories of all kinds and genuinely loved people. He had a gift for listening, and friends often felt comfortable sharing their life stories with him. Wherever he went, Joe made friends easily and left a lasting impression. Of all the roles he held in life, “Grandpa” was his favorite title, and he treasured time spent with his grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his wife, Margo Lynne Okapal; his son, Ross; his daughters, Mecca and Rainna; his brothers, Dan, Andy, and Michael Okapal; and his sisters, Linda Funk, Janet Newton, and Jean Hass. He is also survived by many extended family members and dear friends.
