Joseph Sailers Obituary
Rev. Sailers was born on December 28, 1929, in Maysville, to the late A. C. Sailers and Wilma Jane Garrison Sailers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Peggy Margaret Cofer Sailers; sister, Sacille Jarrett; brothers, Willard Sailers, Sandy Sailers, Horace Sailers, Ralph Sailors, and Larry Sailors.
Rev. Sailers dedicated his life to teaching and ministry, beginning a distinguished 30-year career in education in 1949. Over the years, he taught in numerous schools across Newton, DeKalb, Banks, Habersham, and Jackson Counties, shaping countless young minds with patience, knowledge, and compassion. In 1962, he answered a higher calling, becoming a Minister of the Gospel and faithfully serving for over three decades. He ministered and provided interim pastoral care to many churches across the region, offering spiritual guidance and unwavering faith to congregations in times of growth and transition. A devoted member of Baldwin Baptist Church, he continued to share his love for teaching by leading Sunday School for many years. He will be remembered as a beloved educator, devoted minister, and faithful servant of God.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Joy Sailers, of Carrollton; Harry and Susan Sailers, of Gainesville; grandchildren, Jordan Sailers and Christa Sailers; and brother, Hiram Sailers of Maysville.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, with Rev. Mark Thomas and Dr. Steve Bennett officiating. Interment followed in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends from noon to 1:45 p.m., Monday, October 13, 2025, at the funeral home prior to the service.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Hospice of one's choice.
Arrangements had been entrusted to the Whitfield Funeral Homes and Crematory, South Chapel.
