Joseph J. Sakowski, 89, of Dalton, died Friday, February 28, 2025, at Mt. Greylock Extended Care.
Born in Dalton on February 17, 1936, son of Joseph A. and Laura M. Lamanski Sakowski, he was educated in Dalton schools and was a 1954 graduate of Dalton High School.
Mr. Sakowski was employed by Crane & Co., Inc., where he was Power Plant Engineer for 34 years. Prior to that, he had worked at Bradley International Airport as an airplane mechanic.
He was a HAM amateur Radio operator and enjoyed using his radio to contact people all over the world without the use of internet or phones. He was a member of the ARRL (American Radio Relay League). He especially enjoyed using his HAM radio experience to assist with fund raiser walks, like the Multiple Sclerosis Walk. He would share information about HAM radios with anyone who showed interest and especially loved teaching his grandchildren Morse Code.
In his younger days he enjoyed fishing, hunting and skiing. He liked to travel the US with his family, taking them across the country and back, visiting many national parks and historic sites. His wife, the former Barbara LaSarso Sakowski, whom he married November 17, 1956, died January 19, 2019.
Mr. Sakowski is survived by a daughter, Donna M. McEwen of Peru and two sons, Stephen J. (wife, Sandra) Sakowski of Dalton and Joseph J. Sakowski, Jr. of Pittsfield; as well as five grandchildren, Molly McEwen (Mike Litchfield), Kyle McEwen (Kessa), Matthew Sakowski (Erin), Jared Sakowski (Alyssa), and Atom Sakowski (Ivy), and five great grandchildren, Bradley Litchfield, Noelle Sakowski, Ethan Sakowski, Howard Sakowski and Paul Sakowski.
