Joseph Topoly Obituary

Joseph A. Topoly, affectionately known as "Coach," age 89, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025. Born on March 16, 1936, to the late Steve and Helen Topoly (nee Pukansky), Joe lived a life filled with love, teaching, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.
Joe is survived by his beloved children, Steve Topoly, Carol Bertone (Tony), Mike Topoly (Nikki), Ann Raglow (Tom), John Topoly (Andrea), and Laura Andrews (James). He was a proud and loving grandfather to 10 grandchildren- Elise, Matthew, Niko, Tommy, Jolina, Katy, Lexi, Joey, Timmy, Karlie, and Aiden - as well as five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear sister, Theresa Topoly-Gentzler, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Topoly, with whom he shared a long and happy marriage while raising their six children, and by his second wife, Jo Ann Topoly.
An alumnus of St. Joseph High School's first graduating class in 1954, Joe served his country with pride in the Army during the Korean conflict. Following his military service, he earned his bachelor's degree from Kent State University and furthered his education with a master's degree from Edinboro University. In his retirement, he devoted his time to the Peace Corps, where he was stationed in Antigua and started a track program for the island's youth.
Joe began his teaching and coaching career at South High School before moving to North High School, where he dedicated himself for many years to teaching and coaching football, wrestling, and track. While at North, he founded the highly successful Ranger Relays track event. Known for his strong connections with students and parents alike, Joe's passion for coaching left a lasting impact on the community.
A proud and devout Catholic, Joe cherished his family deeply and was an enthusiastic fan of Cleveland sports and the Ohio State Buckeyes. In his younger years, he found joy in fishing, gardening, and traveling.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Joe's life during visitation on Sunday, November 23, 2025, from 2 to 6 PM at Monreal Srnick Funeral Home, located at 35400 Curtis Blvd, Eastlake.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 24, 2025, at 10 AM at St. Justin Martyr Church, located at 35781 Stevens Blvd, Eastlake. Joe will be laid to rest at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon, where he finds eternal peace as he is reunited with his beloved wife, Doris, his parents, and his heavenly Father. In honor of his legacy, we invite all who knew Joe to join us in remembering a dedicated teacher, coach, father, grandfather, and friend who profoundly touched the lives of many.
