Joseph Zwastetzky Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hart Funeral Home Inc on Jan. 5, 2026.
Joseph L. "Joe" Zwastetzky, 87, of Murrysville, passed away peacefully January 1, 2026, at Newhaven Court in Greensburg. He was born November 21, 1938, in Monongahela, son of the late Constantine and Mary Agnes (Yurich) Zwastetzky. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Catherine Beam and Irene Gallagher, and a granddaughter, Angela Wesolowski.

Joe enlisted in the United States Navy at age 20, serving honorably as a Petty Officer from 1959 to 1963. After his military service, he went on to build an impressive career at Union Switch and Signal as an Electrical Engineer. While working full-time, he enrolled in college at the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a bachelor's degree. He then moved on to a long and illustrious career at Westinghouse in their transportation division. While there, he helped build people mover systems both nationwide and internationally, most notably the Pittsburgh International Airport gate concourse and the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in San Francisco. During his career, he and his team developed a patent in this field that was utilized in several systems to ensure quality control and safety.

He cherished time with his family, was known for his sense of humor and dad jokes. He enjoyed sharing a glass of wine with friends and family, playing cards, fishing with his children, all Pittsburgh sports, and spoiling his grandchildren. He was inherently generous, always helping others in need with sincerity and compassion.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean C. (Kazimer) Zwastetzky; a daughter, Donna (Daniel) Wesolowski; two sons, Joseph G. (Susan) Zwastetzky and David L. (Michelina) Zwastetzky; his five grandchildren, Nikki and Lea Wesolowski, and Lucas, Adam, and Seth Zwastetzky; three sisters, Maggie Cauley, Marge Codispodi, and Ann Rabon; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life for Joe will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Hart Funeral Home Inc., Murrysville.
