It is with great sadness that the Josephine de Sousa family announces her passing on July 15 at the age of 103. She was a determined and energetic force who enjoyed every day and was an inspiration to family and friends all around her.

Born in New York, New York on March 20, 1922. She married Edgar in 1941 and raised three children. The family relocated to Cherry Hill, NJ and soon after, she began a career working as Cherry Hill Deputy County clerk. She later transitioned as secretary in the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Josephine worked under the direction of six consecutive county prosecutors. She finally retired at the age of 89 after a career consisting of over 50 years of public service.

All would agree that Josephine was referred to as a "Universal Mom". Not only was she the monarch of the family, but also more importantly, a role model of who a perfect mother and grandmother should be. Relatives, including nieces and nephews would rely on their aunt "Jo" for guidance and love after having lost their own mother.

Josephine was a great cook, she would bake 16 varieties of cookies each Christmas season, her fresh baked pies, and pastries were better than anyone could imagine. Her infamous strawberry shortcake was well renowned and always much desired. She was a great shopper, and her favorite stores were Costco and BJ's.

Mom lived independently until the last two years of her life when her daughter Denise moved in to assist with her needs.

She was a person of deep faith who supported her church in many ways. When she was no longer physically able to attend Sunday mass, a collection of Eucharistic ministers would take turns visiting her in her home on Sunday mornings. Each of the ministers became mom's great friends, and she looked forward to their weekly visits.

Josephine is preceded in death by her husband, Edgar, her parents, Giuseppe and Giovanna Faviana, her late siblings, Frances, Angelina, Isadore and Rose. Survived by children, Edgar (Barbara), Dennis and Denise. Devoted grandmother of Brian (Cynthia), Beth Ann (Steven), Jennifer (Joe) and Great Grandmother of Justin, Colby (Ryan), Christopher, Evan, Catherine, Johan and Elian and great great grandmother of Riley.

The family would like to thank the professionals at Samaritan hospice for their special support and compassion they extended for the last few weeks of her life.

Relatives and friends will gather Monday evening 6 to 9pm in The Schetter Funeral Home, 304 W. Marlton Pike, Cherry Hill, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday 11am in Christ Our Light Church, 402 N. Kings Hwy, Cherry Hill, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice, 3906 Church Road, Mt. Laurel, NJ 08054.

And/or to Christ Our Light Church at the above address.
