Josephine Carter Holmes-Hudson transitioned from earthly time to eternity with her Lord on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at the age of 81. Josephine was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on January 01, 1943, to the late Joe Wilson and Hester McFarland. Josephine fell in love and was married to her soulmate Kenneth Hudson in the summer of 2024.
Josephine, lovingly known as "Josie" retired from the city of Portland after over 20 years of public service where she worked tirelessly with the guidance and admiration from 5 of the city of Portland previous Mayors. Josie also worked in the judicial system on occasion, as well as conducted various seminars sharing her abundant experience, training, wisdom and inspirational words with all whom she met. Josie was very active in her community; she spent countless hours volunteering and working with people from all walks of life and those recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. She provided counseling, mediation and support and worked providing ministry and support within the Oregon State Prison system for over 36 years. Josephine was a great community activist, leader and a woman of deep passion and conviction.
Josephine was an evangelist missionary at Daniels Memorial COGIC for well over 40 years and was well known for establishing her own ministry the "Spoken Word Ministries" and was the founder and owner of "Hester's Adult Care Center" where from her own home she cared for individuals with developmental disabilities. She was also founder of the Lorenzo Joe Carter Center with the motto "Helping others achieve their potential" which is what Josie always strived to do in each endeavor she took on and with each person she helped. One of Josie's greatest joys was time spent preaching weekly church service at the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility for women.
Josie received written recognition and acknowledgement from previous United States President, Barak Obama, for her efforts in health and wellness, she was a United States
chaplain, member of the American Jail Association, was honored by the first lady of the city of Portland in 2015 for speaking against gang and gun violence, and the 78th Int'l Women's Convention C.O.G.I.C coordinator. There are many more community and volunteer accomplishments that Josie took part in and while her list of accomplishments are far too many to name. It was her true Love and Faith in God that stood her out from the rest. She was a true woman of God. She loved attending church and generously sharing her time and support with her friends and family. She was an international evangelist missionary who held many honors, certificates, recognitions and commendations who will truly be missed but not forgotten.
Josephine is survived by her loving spouse, Kenneth Hudson; daughter, Simon Carter; siblings, David Wilson and Charles Wilson; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, relatives and friends.
