"Veterans Day 2022, 17 years after the passing of Josh. Although I knew him as a friend and classmate in high school (class of 92), the nature of his sacrifice has garnered even more meaning to me as time has gone by. Spending 16 years in the Air Force myself, I am familiar with the noble pursuits and honorable service that Josh, along with many other proud military members, have provided and continue to provide to our great nation. But I can never truly put into words what his ultimate sacrifice means to all of us who walked beside him and looked up to him. Josh will always be remembered by a grateful nation. A true Veteran and a true Patriot. An American hero who will never be forgotten! Your legacy lives on, Josh Hyland. Blessings to all who had the privilege of knowing you!"

I am so very sorry that I am just finding this out! I served with josh back in 1995-1996. We were a part of 1st battalion 75th ranger regiment. We finished AIT together and went to battalion. We were really good friends. I was surprised when he called and told me he was going to re-enlist to go back. I did tell him I completely supported him and wished I could go with him! We lost touch at that time. Lanie, my name is Brad Gilbert. My deepest AMD most heartfelt sympathy plus with you and Dylan. I am so sorry I didnt know before. I hope yall are doing good.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Joshua M. Hyland US Army 1st Lieutenant. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Joshua, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

December 13, 2006

During the holiday season, it is especially hard having lost Josh. I have been going through a lot of pictures and letters lately that he had written me through our marriage, as well as the ones that I had written him. He saved every letter I ever wrote to him, as I did his. I still have the phone answering machine that we had in Italy and I play his messages once in a while, just so I don't forget his voice. I miss him like I would miss my heart if it was taken from me. In the past year, I have tryed to make the best life for Dylan and myself, although failing miserably at most endevor I try, I just have to keep putzing along and try to live like he would have wanted us to live.. But that in itself is hard. My house is a wreck most of the time. I don't know if it is because I feel like he would get really angry and maybe come back to let me know about it, or if I am just rebelling against his incessant cleaning. I don't know. I just know that I wish he was here. I need my husband and Dylan needs his father.. He is now 14 and is in that "rebellious" stage, where everything he does is right and he dares anyone to say anything about it.. It isn't an easy road by any means. I always told Josh that I didn't get married to be alone. (one of our many arguements) But now, I guess it is my fate. Maybe I shouldn't have complained about it that much. He was living his life the way he thought was best. My job was to wait. And I am still waiting.

Thank you for all of your comments and remembrances of Josh. It is heartwarming to know so many care.

Merry Christmas to you all and God Bless.

I want to thank everyone wno have posted such heartwarming notes on this website in honor of my son, Josh Hyland. The hardest thing life I've had to face is the loss of a son. Even though it has been over a year since he was killed in Afghanistan, the pain of loss is still very clear. Reading again your wonderful thoughts and remembrances of who Josh was as a classmate, friend, and officer warms my heart & brings comfort to my loss. My heart especially goes out to Lynda Hyland from Florida with a son named Josh Hyland. I'm sure you were in shock to google your sons name & cross into our families sorrow. I pray your Josh is safe & out of harms way.
Thank-you all for remembering Josh and sharing your stories with us.
As we all continue to grapple with what life has brought our way, I pray the God of our understanding will bring acceptance and peace to all of you.

To the Hyland Family

My son was another Lt who served in B-Company with Josh and was with them that day in August on that convoy. I want to express my sincere sympathy and on this Memorial Day weekend let you know that not a day goes by that I do not think of that day and the lives that were lost and grieve with you. And although the company has returned to Vicenza and the mission is complete, Josh and the other men, will never be forgotten. They are heros and will always live in the hearts of the men and the famililes that served with them. God bless you and give you peace.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

My heart goes out to Josh and his family. I will always remember his goofy laugh that shook his whole body and those darling dimples. As a teenager, he was both a gentleman and a complete dork (those of you that knew him then know what I mean). He was a generous soul in high school, and that obviously never changed. He would have given anything to anyone that asked. He will be missed for not only who he was, but what he could have been. I feel blessed that I had the chance to call him a friend. May God bless his family. Josh's memory lives on as strong as the life he lived.

I don't think there is anything that we can say to express how sorry we are for all of you. If there is one thing I have faith in, it's the fact that your family is and will remain one of the strongest families I have ever known and had the pleasure being a part of. I know that Josh died for something that he believed in and we will honor him for that for eternity. We are very fortunate to have had David go to Iraq twice and return home safely and we will never take that for granted again. A great amount of guilt is felt throughout our home for having to watch someone close to us sacrifice his life for our rights, morals and beliefs too. Lanie, I have a great amount of respect for you, as I haven't met a single military wife as strong as you. Marty and Linda, I want to thank you for always being there for me, I only wish I could be there for you in your time of need. Rick and Laura, I am so glad that you have each other to go down this road with. God bless all of you and know that you are in our hearts and prayers always.

My most genuine thoughts and prayers are with everyone who knew Josh, especially his family. Josh was always a good friend of mine, despite losing touch after high school. Many of our high school buddies and I spent countless nights at his house playing german spotlight and stirring up trouble on the poker table. And let me tell you all, his paws shook like crazy whenever he had a good hand!! Josh, i am amazed to learn of all your exciting adventures and so proud of you for remaining committed to your goals. Your courage and bravery will never be forgotten, and you are truly an inspiration to us all. May God be with you always.
