Joy Mefford Malone, 62 of Owensboro passed into the arms of her Savior on Monday, January 9, 2017 at Vanderbilt University Hospital. Her love for Christ, musical gifts and faithfulness during her illness were a testimony to the grace of God in her life. Joy was born April 7, 1954 in Owensboro to the late Durwood and Martha Galloway Mefford. Joy glorified God as a follower of Jesus Christ, a wife, mother, sister, "Mimi", piano teacher, collaborative pianist, composer and arranger. Her musical gifts were multi-faceted and extraordinary. She felt God's pleasure when she played, and it brought her overwhelming happiness. At her home church, Heritage Baptist, she played supportively and artistically to color the text and stylistically played to support the congregational singing. Intuitively, she could tell what a hymn needed to bring a fuller sense of worship. Her roles included pianist at First Baptist Church, collaborative pianist for Kentucky All State and All-District Choirs at the High School, Junior High and Elementary levels as well as wonderful summers with Music at Maple Mount. She played at Carnegie Hall with the Festival Chorus and New York City Chamber Orchestra for the Mozart Requiem in 2012. This past summer, her composition "The Music Within Us," initially sung by the Kentucky Youth Chorale, was featured at the International Children's Choral Festival at Canterbury Cathedral in London, England. Several other compositions will soon be submitted for publication. Thirty-eight years and hundreds of piano students received a legacy of patient and encouraging instruction. Some participated in Governor's School for the Arts, some pursued piano as a career or became instructors themselves, and some continue her legacy by accompanying their congregations in worship. Her children had the privilege of her faithful, fun and quiet parenting. Her grandchildren adored and were adored by their 'Mimi'. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 39 years, David, daughter Katie Malone Redfern and her husband Mark with their children Judson, Piper Joy and Caroline; daughter Emily Hope Malone; son Calvin David Malone all of Owensboro; sisters, Susan Toadvine and her husband Michael of Louisville, and Sandra Jane Wilson and her husband Jon of Owensboro. The service will be noon on Saturday at Heritage Baptist Church with Pastors Ted Christman and Mark Redfern officiating. Burial will follow at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 – 8:00 pm and Saturday after 10:00 am at the church. Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to the "Joy Mefford Malone Music Fund" at Heritage Christian School, 3585 Thruston-Dermont Rd. Owensboro, KY 42303 or "The Scleroderma Foundation" in her name via www.scleroderma.org. Contributions to both will be matched up to $3000.

Mrs. Malone was one of the kindest people I knew. She was always warm and welcoming with everyone in which she came into contact with. I am deeply sorry for your family's loss. Even though I didn't quite enjoy piano lessons, I always firmly believed that she was the best pianist in the world! Wish I could have been there for visitation and the funeral. Much love and take care.

For Joy's family and especially to Beth and Lori, whom I know so well, my deepest symphony. Joy strummed her guitar for our sixth-grade slumber party. She gave us the words to folksongs, Mary, Paul, and Mary long before any of us knew or understood how important those words should be to all of us.

Dearest David and family, there are indeed no words to express the deep sadness I feel for this great loss in all of your lives. I am praying for you today and will continue to pray in the coming days and weeks, and even years. It was my great privilege to have known your dear wife and mother, and I pray that our Great God and Father will comfort you and bless you with and abundance of His dear Spirit. I look forward to seeing her again in the heavenly realms of glory as I know all of you do. "For I know that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." <3

Joy was a wonderful talented musician and friend. I will remember our times at First Baptist Church in Richmond, Kentucky and at EKU. I got the change to see her 20 years ago in Louisville, Kentucky at the KMA conference. We had time to sit down and have a conversation that made us both laugh. I will never forget her kindness, her dedication to her church, and family. You will be missed by many.

David, Emily, Katie and Calvin,

Words do not feel adequate at this time. Joy's life and friendship are treasures. God blessed immensely when he gave us Joy.

Thank each of you for continuing to share photos, videos, and moments of her life with us. You continue to bless us.

Please know you are continually in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers.

What can I say about Joy Malone that hasn't already been said? Of all the people that I have interacted with over the years, Joy was the most "Christian". Hers was sincere and authentic. She was genuinely interested in what you had to say. Her voice was kind. She, and her husband David, are one of those "foundational" people that make an indelible imprint on a person's life. For me, they will never be forgotten. Today, I am sad, because I will never see Joy's face physically. However, I am not without hope. One day, we will all see Him face to face. On that day, I will be singing with the saints, and Joy will be playing her piano, singing all along as well. I will miss you Joy. Rest in peace.
