Joy Monica Sandler passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, in Savannah, Georgia, just one week short of her 94th birthday.
Joy was born on December 12, 1931, to Walter and Fann Chipkin in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 1953, she married her husband, Basil Sandler, and together they raised four sons. In 1998, Joy and Basil joined their children in the United States, making their home in Hilton Head, South Carolina, where they lived until Basil’s passing in May 2022.
Joy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she cultivated a family legacy rooted in compassion, warmth, and empathy. She was universally loved by everyone who had the privilege of meeting her and possessed a unique ability to see the good in everyone she encountered.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Basil; their cherished son Michael; and her brothers, Mervyn and Bernard. She is survived by her sons, Daniel (Helese) of Savannah, Georgia; Robert (Benita) of Potomac, Maryland; Anthony (Nancy) of Bethesda, Maryland; and her daughter-in-law, Brenda of Los Angeles, California. She is also survived by her grandchildren Josh, Jessica (Ben), Tarryn (Guy), Gabi (Jonathan), Ryan, Michelle, Alexis, Claire, and Jacob, as well as her great-grandchildren Calder, David, Ocean, Noah, and Olani.
Joy’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Buckingham South for the exceptional care and compassion they provided to Joy over the past two years, as well as Annie Nash, RN, and staff at Amedisys Hospice.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 8th, at 3:00 pm at Bonaventure Cemetery, with Rabbi Avigdor Slatus officiating.
