Joyce Ann Alongi, with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Joyce Ann Alongi, on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at the age of 86. An inspiration of love, wisdom, and generosity, her presence brought warmth, smiles and light to everyone who knew her. She was our "Sunshine."
Born on May 4, 1938 in Jonesboro, AR, Joyce Ann Hicks, the daughter of the late Ray and Ola (Orr). Joyce was the remaining of her five siblings, James (Jimmy), Richard (Dick), Carl, Fay and Shirley. Her life was a testament to kindness and compassion. She had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel valued and heard, and her radiant smile could brighten even the darkest days. You will always be our Sunshine Mom/Nana.
When Joyce married Charles John Alongi Sr. on that special day April 12, 1958, it was the beginning of a journey. They spent 56 beautiful years together before Charles's passing on November 28, 2015. Joyce and Charles planned and dreamed about their future life when they moved out of the city into the country in 1968 to raise their children on the "farm." Joyce's passions were rooted deep, especially with growing fruits, vegetables and flowers. As a Master Gardner, her talent to grow just about anything had no bounds. Many years later, the Alongi's Greenhouses were established and became a landmark of the Lenox community.
Joyce's greatest joy was her family and friends. Surviving are five daughters, Regina Alongi, Dina Alongi, Rosa Stanek, Patricia (Warren deceased) Alongi-Snyder, and Elizabeth (Daniel) Zimmer; two sons, Charles (Shari) Alongi and Timon Alongi; 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandkids, whom she gave unconditional love and was a guiding force in their lives.
Joyce was a woman of remarkable strength, unwavering faith, and selflessness. Her dedication to her community was evident in her countless acts of service and her involvement in World Day of Prayer, mentoring young gardeners, and in her grandchildren's school activities.
Always a teacher, a role model, and an artist, she gifted her knowledge about art, gardening, food, and her many interests. Joyce's famous bread recipe was taught to each generation, and was always present at her holiday gatherings. Her stained-glass creations adorn the halls and windows of her home. She was commissioned to do many large-scale pieces for friends and family, but she would end up gifting most of her creations. Joyce could fix anything too, even a broken heart.
