Joyce Westmoreland Bumpass

DURHAM –Our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother Joyce Westmoreland Bumpass, 93, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Durham County to the late John Garvis Westmoreland and Emma Rebecca Mabry Westmoreland on April 5, 1932. In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, Charlie Lee Bumpass, brothers, Garvis Westmoreland, John Westmoreland and grandson, Joshua Greenhill.
Joyce attended Bragtown High School where she was a cheerleader. She was a proud graduate of Watts Hospital School of Nursing, earning her RN in 1952. As a faithful lifetime member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Joyce's activities included teaching third grade Sunday School and Bible School. She was a member of the Harvey Black Sunday School class, the Wednesday Morning Circle, and the Just for Fun Singers. She was a Brownie leader, a Junior Girl Scout leader, and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Joyce was a talented artist who enjoyed painting, ceramics, crocheting and crafting. She loved the outdoors, walking on the beach, gardening, tending her flowers, watching and feeding her bluebirds and hummingbirds. She enjoyed square dancing with Charlie and their friends, traveling, playing cards, and spending time with her family.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Littleton (Robert); Susan (Jerry) Greenhill; grandchildren, Jeremy (Amanda) Littleton, Scott (Erin) Littleton, Molly Weeks (Mike Wilson), Jennifer (James) McQueen; Julia Littleton, James Littleton, Caroline Littleton, Anna Littleton, Mary Cameron Littleton, Jackson Littleton, Sophie Littleton, Cole Littleton, Kylie Weeks, Caiden Weeks, Savannah Taylor, Noah McQueen, and Gabriel McQueen.
We will be forever grateful to Rhonda Gaskins and Vance Hunter at Hillcrest Convalescent Center for the exceptional, kind and loving care they showed to Joyce and her family during her rehab stays.
Our family would like to thank Joyce's granddaughter, Molly Rebecca Weeks, Mike Wilson and Alice Batts for the loving and compassionate care they gave to Joyce which enabled her to spend her final days at home.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, April 16th at Bethany United Methodist Church, with Pastor Cole Breit officiating. The family will receive friends from 1pm to 2 pm prior to the service at the church.
