Biography
Joyce Ann Burgin passed away on January 3, 2026, after a sudden illness. She was 91 years old. Joyce was born in Aurora, Missouri on October 3, 1934, to Merle Gertrude Thurman (née Taylor) and Joy Abner Thurman.
She graduated from Senior High school in Springfield, Missouri in 1952. She graduated from Southwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education in1957. She married Alonzo Augustus Burgin, Jr., also of Springfield, Missouri in 1957. She worked as a First Grade Teacher for 32-years. She enjoyed teaching piano and Sunday School Class for children of all ages. Joyce also enjoyed crafting, water walking, playing piano for Sunday Church, and shopping with her friends and neighbors.
Since 2012 Joyce enjoyed those years at Brookdale Club Hill participating in exercise class, crafting groups, and bingo. She enjoyed visiting with her many friends there.
Joyce is survived by her niece Kelley Thurman and husband Kelly Sherman of Springfield, Missouri; nephew Doug Thurman and wife Julie of Fort Worth, Texas; her sister-in-law, Sandra Wallace of Fort Worth, Texas; her nephew David Kastendieck and wife Schann of Houston, Texas; and her daughter Julie Bell and son-in-law Denis Bell of Austin, Texas. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, by her only brother Howard Mac Thurman, and by her husband "Lon" of 56 years.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 16. 2026, 12:30 PM at Williams Funeral Directors, 1600 South Garland Avenue, Garland, Texas 75040. A graveside service will be at Restland Memorial Park.
