Joyce Marie Grones

Joyce Marie Grones, 83, of Detroit Lakes, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2026.

Joyce, the daughter of Fern Campos and Russell Johnson, was born on April 13, 1942, in Minneapolis. She was united in marriage to James Grones on November 24, 1962, in Minneapolis.

That same year, James and Joyce moved to Detroit Lakes, where they raised their three sons, John, Joe, and Jeff. Joyce worked over the years at Bremer Bank, Evans Super Market, and State Farm Insurance. She also kept busy tending her gardens on the farm and continued her love of plants both indoors and outdoors throughout her retirement.

Mom's name said it all - Joyce. Her name is associated with being joyous and merry, willing to rejoice even during difficult times. She was steady and rooted in the Christian faith. Joy was a choice she made throughout every phase of her life. Even in hardship, she chose joy. Her radiant smile reflected the strength and peace within her.

Joyce also loved singing at church. She was a member of the "Joyful" Noise music group at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and sang in the choir at her church in Florida.

Her smile - and the joy she carried so faithfully - will always be remembered.

Per her request, some of her ashes were spread at the farm. The rest will be placed next to her husband, James, at the Catholic Cemetery in Detroit Lakes.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Fern and Russell; her stepfather, Gene Campos; and her husband, James.

She is survived by her three children: John (Yen), Joe (Becky), and Jeff; her sister, Judy Daher (Donny); her brothers, David Johnson and Fred Campos; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on March 7, 2026, at Country Inn & Suites in Detroit Lakes.
