Joyce Kay Hanson, born on September 4, 1950, in Alexandria, left this world on February 9, 2026, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. She was a beloved figure in her community, a nurturing spirit whose heart of gold shone brightly through every aspect of her life. Joyce was the first of the esteemed Hanson dozen to pass, leaving a legacy that will endure in the hearts of her family and friends.

She was both baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith, guiding countless children through their own journeys in faith as a dedicated Sunday school teacher for decades at Peace Lutheran Church of Barrett. Joyce’s educational roots run deep; she graduated from Barrett High School in 1968 and furthered her studies at the University of Minnesota Morris.

A dedicated professional, Joyce’s career spanned decades and varied fields. For fifteen years, she served as the school secretary for Barrett Public Schools, a role in which she became not just an administrator, but a cherished confidant and guide for both students and staff alike. Her compassion continued to resonate as she worked more than twenty years as a 911 dispatcher for Grant County, where her calm demeanor and quick thinking undoubtedly aided countless individuals in their moments of crisis. After her retirement, she returned to her passion for education by taking up a position in the library at West Central Schools, fostering a love of learning in the next generation.

Joyce’s vibrant spirit extended well beyond her professional life. A devoted aunt to 25 nieces and nephews, she thrived in attending their activities, always cheering them on with unique enthusiasm. Her deep love for family may have been best expressed through her yearly tradition of sending Christmas ornaments to all her loved ones, a small token of her appreciation and remembrance. She effortlessly remembered each family member’s birthday and extended family details, ensuring that no one felt forgotten.

An avid sports fan, Joyce was particularly passionate about the Minnesota Twins, with her heart firmly rooted in the Barrett Pioneer Baseball Team, where she advocated tirelessly for the sport she loved. Her unwavering support for baseball transcended mere fandom; it was a reflection of her commitment to community and the joy of shared experiences.

Throughout her life, Joyce was known for her infectious smile, her sincerity, and the warm hugs she readily shared. She will be profoundly missed by her siblings: Dick (Sharon) Hanson, Connie Fabian, Cheri Wiens, Jim (Pat) Hanson, Nancy Hanson, Dale Hanson, Dean (Dottie) Hanson, Gail (Bob) Heubsch, Bobbi Jo (Dave) Wiener, Julie (Phil) Kloos, and David (Lisa) Hanson, who cherish the memories they made together and will carry her love in their hearts forever. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Gunhild.

Joyce leaves behind not just a legacy of service and devotion but also the warmth of laughter and the joy of connection. As friends and family gather to remember her on February 18, 2026, at Peace Lutheran Church of Barrett—where visitation begins at 9:30 AM followed by a memorial service at 10:30 AM—they will share stories, hold close the memories and celebrate a life beautifully lived. As they remember Joyce, they will find comfort in knowing that her spirit, passionate and vivacious, will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known her.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for memorial donations to be given to either the Prairie Wind Players, the Barrett Pavilion Restoration Fund, or the Barrett C & C.
