Clyde – Joyce Annette Smith Jones, 73, a native of Haywood County, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2022, at Maggie Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, with loved ones by her side.
Daughter of Bonnie Smith Buchanan (Fred) and the late Charles Smith, Joyce is survived by her husband of 52 years, Mike; daughter Bonnie (Greg), son Mick (Nicole), daughter Megan, six grandchildren Eli, Olivia, Isaac, Millie, Harrison, Lucas of Haywood County, sister Priscilla (Phil), and nephews Charles, Timothy, Samuel of Hillsborough.
Joy earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Western Carolina University, and then spent 33 years teaching in Haywood County, 22 years as an elementary school teacher with Haywood County Schools, and several years teaching GED and ESL classes at Haywood Community College. Outside the classroom, Joy enjoyed reading, sewing, crafts, and spending time with family and friends. Joy was an active member of Hazelwood Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, organized communion stewards, and participated in the video production committee. Joy actively supported her children and grandchildren in their many school and community activities, especially volunteering as a band parent with the Tuscola Marching Mountaineers.
A private family graveside service will take place. All are welcome at a Memorial Service to be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at Hazelwood Baptist Church with Reverend Tim Lolley officiating. The family will receive friends and family beginning at 1:00 PM in the sanctuary.
