Joyce Gail Kangas, longtime Negaunee resident, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, March 29, 2025 while in the care of the staff at the MediLodge in Munising.
Joyce was born April 20, 1948, in Logansport, Louisiana, to Jesse and Helen Marie (Ernst) Edwards, and moved to the Kansas City area where she later graduated from Van Horn High School, Class of 1966. She married the love of her life, David Kangas in Jackson, Missouri in June of 1970. In 1971, Joyce and David decided to move to the Upper Peninsula and ultimately made it their home, and raised their family in Negaunee.
Joyce was a devout member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee. She enjoyed camping, housekeeping, and especially spending time with her loving family. She took a lot of pride in her work, where she was a housekeeper for the Holiday Inn, and Ramada Inn in Marquette.
She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, David Kangas, two sons: Richard (Tamara) Kangas of Negaunee, and Shawn Kangas of Marquette. She is also survived by two special nieces and one nephew: Jenny Neidholdt, Carla Leon, and Michael Leon. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, one sister: Patricia Leon, and one brother-in-law, Carl Leon.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 9 at Koskey Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 AM until the start of services at 11:00 AM at the funeral home on Wednesday. The family wants to thank the staff at UPHS-Marquette and the staff at the MediLodge in Munising for the great care provided.
