Joyce Marie was the fourth child of the late Alfred Mason and Mamie Campbell Mason, who was born October 14, 1946, in Nashville, Tennessee. She attended the public schools of Davidson County and graduated from Tennessee State University in 1968. At an early age she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and attended St. Luke, CME Methodist Church in Nashville. She served faithfully as a member of the Stewardess Board and Sunday School. She later joined Faith is the Victory Church under the leadership of Pastor Charles Cowan. She served faithfully for over 30 years serving in the nursery and bookstore.
She was united in holy matrimony to Robert Mathis, Jr. in 1970. The union was blessed with one child, Robert III.
Joyce worked for Tennessee State University in the Bursar’s Office. She later worked for Metro Social Services with Patricia Wingfield and Addie DeGraphenreid (deceased) whom she met in college. Coincidentally, they all married basketball players and retired from Metro Social Services.
She had six close friends from childhood that walked through life together: Doris Fuller, friend of 71 years, Constance Joseph, a long-time friend from elementary school, Beverly Jacobs, Dr. Sarah Chapman, Sadie King, and Camara Crooks (deceased). She also had supportive neighbors and friends including Reva Keeling and Alvin Cantrell.
Joyce’s beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives and legacy of her child, Robert Mathis III (Ruby), Hagerstown, MD; her grandchildren, Robert Mathis IV, Auora, CO, Austin Mathis, Acworth, GA, and Anson Mathis, Acworth GA; her sisters, Lois Holmes (deceased), Grace Mason, Nashville, TN, Janice Johnson, Nashiville, TN, and her brother Alfred Mason, Antioch, TN; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
