JOYCE MAYFIELD Obituary

JOYCE MAYFIELD Joyce Maxine Mayfield, a cherished wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2025, in Manteca, California. Born on February 14, 1942, in Garden City, Kansas, she was the daughter of Samuel and Marguerite (Scruggs) Hamill. Joyce graduated from Garden City High School in 1960. Following graduation, she married Raymond Mayfield in May of 1960 in Garden City, KS. They would spend 36 years together in marriage until his passing in September of 1996. Together, they loved watching their children and grandchildren grow. In her spare time, Joyce enjoyed playing games such as cards, Dominoes, and Rummicube. Joyce will be remembered for her boisterous, infectious laughter and her knock on the table to keep the game moving. She also loved to watch romantic movies. For a while, K-Dramas were her favorite. She spent an impressive 30 years working in education for USD #501 in Topeka, Kansas. Most of those years were spent as an administrative secretary for Whitson Elementary School, where she was known for her tireless work ethic and supportive, loving nature, which left a lasting impact on those she worked with and the many students she served. Beyond her career, Joyce was deeply committed to her community and faith. Her volunteer work at Stormont Vail Hospital showcased her altruistic spirit, while her involvement with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints highlighted her faith and her devotion to her Savior, Jesus Christ. Joyce found fulfillment in her service in the church, including teaching various children's classes, as well as serving with other women within the Relief Society. Joyce loved children. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her immense joy. That love extended to the children she worked with at Whitson and at church. Joyce's legacy is carried on by her loving family, which includes her son, Tim (Desirae) Mayfield, her daughter, Janell (Jim) Marchello, and her niece, Chrissy Hamill Clark (whom she helped raise). She was a proud grandmother to Andrew Mayfield, Sean Mayfield, Ashley (Mayfield) Robison, Zach Marchello, Josh Marchello, and Alyssa (Marchello) Woolstenhulme, all of whom will treasure the memories of her love and guidance. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond T. Mayfield; her father, Samuel Willis Hamill; her mother, Marguerite (Scruggs) Hamill; her brother, Samuel Hamill; and her sister, Zelma Guinn. Joyce's enduring spirit and love will live on in the hearts of those whose lives she touched, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her family will greet friends and relatives from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 11, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2401 SW Kingsrow Road, Topeka, KS 66614. She will be laid to rest with her husband at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Children's Discovery Center, 4400 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604, in honor of Joyce's love for children and learning.

Yesterday

Janell, Tim and family, my deepest condolences to on losing your beautiful Mother Joyce. I went to GCHS with her and and have known her for many years. I knew a lot of her relatives and her Mother and mine were in Garden Valley and I called bingo on Friday so I saw Marguerite and at other activities and Joyce would come see her mom often thru the years and it was so good seeing her. She was always laughing, loved bingo and cards, Beautiful lady and will be missed by all who knew her.
