Joyce Faye (Hanson) Miller, 89, of Moorhead, MN passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023, at Eventide on 8th, Moorhead, MN.
Joyce was born on August 31, 1933, in Fargo, ND, to Norman and Eva (Vice) Hanson. Mom was raised in Detroit Lakes, MN, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1951 where she participated in many activities. Following high school, mom worked at Evan’s grocery store in Detroit Lakes. In addition to working at Evan’s, she babysat for many families.
Mom was a tremendous seamstress from her high school days and continued well into her 80’s. Mom met the love of her life, Neil Miller, the summer of 1955, in Detroit Lakes. The two love birds were married on April 8, 1956, at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. Following their marriage, Mom and Dad moved to Moorhead, MN, where they raised their four children, Vicki, Greg, Jeff, and Amy. Mom stayed at home to raise the children until all the kids were in school.
In 1975, Mom started her food service career with Moorhead Public Schools at Thomas Edison Elementary School, retiring in 1999 as the head cook at Thomas Edison. She loved all the kids and staff she served over the years. Mom also worked many summers in the 1970s and 1980s for the Migrant School Program as a cook in the Moorhead schools.
Mom was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead. Mom was always happy to volunteer at the church and made many friends through her service.
Mom and Dad enjoyed their retirement years together at Lake Six in Minnesota and spent many Januarys in Hawaii. The most joy of retirement was following the activities of their grandchildren throughout the state. Mom also enjoyed many fun trips with her sisters, Ruth and Marlys. Many laughs and memories were made with the three of them! Our Mom was the happiest when she was cooking, baking, and socializing with her family and friends. No one will ever forget her world-famous potato salad.
We are the four that were lucky enough to call Joyce our mom, Vicki (Mike) Headley, Frazee, MN, Greg (Janet) Miller, Virginia, MN, Jeff (Ronette) Miller, Ottertail, MN, and Amy (Brad) Bassingthwaite, Roseau, MN. Joyce is loved and remembered by her grandchildren, Megan (James) Klein, Rebecca Headley, Nick (Kristine) Miller, Coco (Mike) Dusek, Karissa Vosen, Jeremy Vosen (Greg Niska), Lucas Reski, Erin Feilen, Betsy Miller, Brooks Miller (Sarah Hunter), and Emma Bassingthwaite. James, Brantley, Deegan, and Riley will surely miss their GG! Mom is also survived by her loving sisters, Ruth Price and Marlys (Ed) Hamann, all of Detroit Lakes, MN, plus many nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. Preceding Mom to Heaven were her parents; our dad, Neil; brothers-in-law, Tom Carlisle and Jerry Price; and nephew, Steven Price.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Eventide and all the health professionals who were part of Mom’s care team at Essentia Clinic and Hospital. You are true angels! Memorials preferred to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead, MN.
Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., followed by the memorial service at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead, MN. A livestream of the service will be available here on Joyce's webpage. Final resting place will be at Fargo National Cemetery, Harwood, ND, following the service.
