Joyce Yvonne Neely (née Chronister) of Ash Flat, Arkansas passed away peacefully October 30, 2025 at the age of 84. She was born April 10, 1941 in Wilburton, Oklahoma to Omer and Evelyn Mathis Chronister. As a young woman, she met and married the love of her life, Arthur D. Neely (USAF Ret.), beginning a lifetime of adventure that took them to Greece, Spain, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Zaire), and many states across the U.S.A.
Joyce had an enduring heart for people. After settling in Hardy, Arkansas, she could be found working in a number of local establishments over the years including Piggly Wiggly, Town & Country, Price Chopper, the Arkansaw Traveller, and finally at the Sharp County Sheriff’s Office, where she served faithfully until her retirement.
In retirement, Joyce found joy in simple pleasures and giving back. She volunteered for several local charities and cherished time spent fishing with Art, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A licensed cosmetologist for over sixty years, Joyce had an unmistakable flair for fashion — bright colors, floral prints, and always a touch of sparkle. She loved crocheting, sewing, and making her famously delicious fruit jellies. Her daughters fondly remember growing up in handmade, often coordinating outfits stitched with love. A passionate reader, Joyce made books and learning a priority in her home — a legacy that lives on through her children and grandchildren. She was also an avid gardener who could name nearly any plant she came across, and she delighted in painting watercolors of the flowers from her garden that Art captured through photography. Together they filled their home with art, color, and love.
A devoted member of Light in the Wilderness Church, Joyce was known as everyone’s Grandma, and she treasured her time with her Senior Club, The Golden Girls. She was always quick to support causes benefiting veterans — a reflection of her lifelong pride as a serviceman’s wife. Her remarkable fifty years of marriage to Art were a testament to their enduring devotion and love as witnessed by their five daughters.
Joyce was the proud mother of DeAnna Jones (Stan) of Hardy, AR, Susan Neely of Springfield, MO, Nancy Russell (née Neely) of Cave City, AR, Alicia Neely of Bellingham, WA, and Christina Hughbank (David) of Moody, TX. She is survived by all five daughters and their spouses along with ten grandchildren and their spouses, twenty-three great-grandchildren and their spouses, and one great-great-grandson — each of whom held a special place in her heart. She also leaves behind many cherished extended family members and a host of dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, beloved husband, one grandson, Micah Burnett (USMC), and one great-grandson, Cameron Russell.
Joyce will be remembered for her zest for life, her love of music and humor, and a laugh that could fill a room. She was a woman whose light and warmth touched everyone she met, and she will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
