Joyce Ann Small passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on September 17, 1952 to the late James E. Gilmore and Nellie Estelle Trammell, Jody touched the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing her, leaving behind a legacy filled with warmth and love.

Throughout her life, Jody wore many hats—she worked several jobs in Selma, including at American Apparel and Phillies Cigar for many years. However, her proudest role was that of a homemaker, where she poured her heart into creating a loving home for her family. Jody possessed an infectious spirit and a profound connection to her loved ones, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent with them, ensuring that they always felt loved and supported.

Jody’s vibrant personality was evident in her love of conversation; she never met a stranger and delighted in fellowship with people from all walks of life. Her laughter could light up a room, and her warm heart made everyone feel welcome. She had a special talent for hosting family events, serving as the glue that held her family together. Her kitchen was a hub of activity, known for her delicious cooking—her cornbread, scratch-made chicken and dumplings, and an array of casseroles became beloved staples at family gatherings, lovingly prepared with a touch of Southern hospitality.

An avid fan of Alabama football, Jody could often be found cheering for her team, her enthusiasm radiating as brightly as her presence. In her spare time, she enjoyed singing karaoke and took great pleasure in caring for those around her. Jody’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her family, as she naturally drew people to her with her kindness and engaging personality.

For 52 beautiful years, Jody was married to her childhood sweetheart, James Small, Sr., who passed away in 2020. Their enduring love story was a testament to their deep bond and mutual admiration, one that enriched their lives and the lives of their family. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, June Gilmore, Sonny Gilmore, Debbie Odom, Bo Gilmore and Charles Lambert and nephews, Steve Davis, Butch Foster and Bryant Smith.

She is survived by her children, Jimbo (Vanessa) Small, Michele Small, Whitley (Roger) Chandler; grandchildren, Ashley (Abigail) Small, Robin (Cody) Evans, Hunter Smith, Ivy Small, Alexis Small, Ariel (Jacob) Hollis, Ezra Chandler and Kendall (Haydon) Mann; numerous great-grandchildren; sisters, Margarette Foster, Ethel (Robert) Byrd and Dorothy Albritten and a host of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma, with David Nichols officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to a center of your choice for Dementia and Alzheimer's research.
