Juanita English Cunningham, 96, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023.
Visitation with family and friends will be Saturday, February 18, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the parlor of Broadmoor Baptist Church, 4110 Youree Dr, Shreveport, Louisiana. A service celebrating her life will follow in the Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Cunningham was born June 21, 1926 in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. Growing up in Lisbon Louisiana, surrounded by a large extended family provided her with many happy and precious memories. After graduating as valedictorian from high school, Juanita moved to Shreveport, Louisiana and began working at the Coca Cola Bottling Company as a bookkeeper. She loved mathematics and always took pride in a beautiful, balanced to the penny, set of books. She soon met Jack Cunningham and they married in 1947. The two were true partners who loved being together working in their beautiful yard, entertaining in their home, traveling the world, and supporting each other for 59 years.
Mrs. Cunningham lived a full and busy life centered around her church, family, and friends. As a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church for over 75 years, she served on numerous committees and taught Sunday School for many of those years. Volunteering as a room mother, Cub Scout den mother, PTA board member, attending school and church performances, preparing plenty of food for countless guests, and cheering from the sidelines at baseball, basketball, and football games demonstrated her loving support for her children and their friends. She was blessed with a dear group of friends who met each month for lunch and “sewing” for over 50 years. Her Shanghai card group became a time of weekly fun and fellowship in her later years.
Mrs. Cunningham was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Eva English; her best friend and sister, Dean English Hurley and her beloved husband, Jack Cunningham.
Surviving Mrs. Cunningham are her children and their spouses, Don Cunningham and his wife, Nancy of Waco, Texas, Jacque Kendall and her husband, Joe of Shreveport; her grandchildren, Ben Cunningham and his wife, Phung of Thailand, Paige Watkins and her husband, Nathan, and their children, Isaac, Lydia, and Levi of Dallas, Texas, Kyle Kendall of Nashville, Tennessee and Whitney Garmhausen and her husband, Geoff, and their children Jack, and Kendall Caroline of Louisville, Kentucky.
The family extends their gratitude for the 50 years of assistance and companionship provided by Bobbie Crawford. We appreciate the care and attention provided by the staffs of the Tower, the North Pavilion at the Oaks of Louisiana, the sitters from Golden Gate Nursing Services, and Christus Hospice. We are thankful for the thoughtful and compassionate care of Dr. Robert Massingill throughout Mom’s journey.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the Jack and Juanita Cunningham Scholarship, c/o New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 3939 Gentilly, New Orleans, LA 70126-4858.
