Juanita Lynn Martin, affectionately known as "Nita Perry", was born on Tuesday, April 5, 1966, to Gloria and Thomasa Perry in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Nita unexpectedly transitioned from this life, leaving behind cherished memories and a lasting impact on those who knew her. During her early years, Nita resided in the Hill District section of Pittsburgh before her family relocated to Homewood, where she made her home. She was educated in the Pittsburgh Public School System, attending Frick Elementary, Reizenstein Middle School, and Westinghouse High School.
On November 8, 1981, Nita welcomed her only child, Tamara Renee Perry-Harvin, into the world. Tamara was Nita's pride and joy, she would often be seen walking around with her on her hip. As an adult, she was so proud and would tell everyone, "My daughter is a Dr." Nita was a force to be reckoned with- fiercly loyal, full of love for her family, and known for her fighting spirit literally. Nita even made a YouTube debut, showing off her fighting skills. She had a walk that was unmistakable and a presence that could not be ignored.
On February 13, 1988, Nita married Carl Martin in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She spent some time living there before returning to Pittsburgh, where she continued to make a life for herself and her family. Throughout her life, Nita held various jobs, working in a candy factory, as a caregiver, and even as a jitney driver. She was known for her strong work ethic and ability to adapt to different roles, always doing what was necessary to support her family. No matter what job she held, her priority was ensuring the well-being of her loved ones.
However, the role she cherished most was that of "Nana". She adored her grandchildren, spent much of her time showering them with love and attention and had a special bond with each of them. Whether it was attending school events, cheering them on at games, or simply spending quality time together, Nita's love for her grandchildren was undeniable. She was a guiding force in their lives, always offering wisdom, encouragement, and a warm embrace when they needed it most. She was looking forward to seeing Morgan become a nurse and the girls graduate from high school. She was so proud of John being in college and playing football.
In 2009, Nita joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and remained a believer in the Lord until the day she transitioned. Her faith was often reflected in her love for gospel music, particularly Yolanda Adams' "This Battle is the Lord's" and "Open My Heart", as well as songs by Marvin Sapp. Her mother called her "Boo Face" and in turn she would call those she loved "Boo Face" too, as a term of endearment.
Nita had a vibrant personality and a great sense of humor. She loved watching crime shows, especially on the ID Channel, and often saw herself as an honorary detective. She could often be found sitting on the couch with a Pepsi in hand, snacking on Twizzlers and indulging in her favorite shows with her dog Louis. She was the life of the party at family gatherings- cracking jokes, dancing, and making sure she was the first to pack a plate and the first to be ready to leave. Her favorite artists were Keith Sweat and Joe, and she would play "I Wanna Know" repeatedly.
Nita was known for her striking beauty, with captivating hazel eyes that sparkled with warmth. She had a signature way of wearing her long, eyelashes, a gesture that could charm and disarm anyone in an instant. Nita adored her glasses and was rarely seen without a stylish pair on. Her infamous mole, which she playfully painted on to enhance her already stunning features, only added to her radiance and character, making her presence unforgettable.
During the last year of her life, Nita lived with her daughter and remained close to her grandchildren, spending precious moments with them until her final day. She frequently expressed how proud she was of her daughter and her grandchildren, leaving them a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Her memory lives on through her daughter, Dr. Tamara Thornhill; her grandchildren, Morgan, Jade, Jasmine, Jordan, and John; her great-granddaughters, Milan and Montana; her brothers, Carlton (Camille) Perry, Michael, and Gregory; and her sisters, Lori, Theresa, Season, and Kim. She is also remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and her beloved uncle, Norman Bowles.
She has now joined her mother and father, as well as her brothers, Thomas and Kevin, and her sister, Mia, in eternal rest. Nita's spirit, warmth, and unwavering devotion t her family will be deeply missed. Her presence was a gift, and her love will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
