Judith Devokaitis Obituary

Judith O. Devokaitis passed away on January 14th, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Judy was the wife of the late Andrew Devokaitis, and is predeceased by her parents Frank and Ruth (Young) Ohlson and her sister Jane (Ohlson) Stevens.

Born in 1944, Judy spent her childhood years growing up on Paper Goods Pond in Kensington, CT spending many winter hours ice-skating. She graduated from Berlin High and went on to Central CT Teacher's College. She taught for more than 28 years at Griswold Elementary School in Berlin before becoming the school's Assistant Principal. Judy retired in 1999 to enjoy time doing her favorite activities- golfing, traveling, skiing, bowling, and watching the UCONN Women's Basketball Team.

Judy was a member of ADK Teaching Sorority, the Women's Club of New Britain, and served on the HOA for her and Andy's residences in both Southington and Rocky Hill. Judy's favorite home away from home was Lake Winnipesaukee where she vacationed at least once a summer. She loved to swim but was notorious for never getting her hair wet- even as she was teaching her niece and nephew to dive.

Judy is survived by her nephew Michael Stevens and his wife Kat, children Samantha and Matthew Zapor of Wethersfield; niece Sarah Barr and her husband Tom and children Elizabeth and Zachary of Portland; brother in law Bruce Stevens of Portland; sister in law Susan Devokaitis and husband Charles Weedon of Pomfret; brother in law Michael Devokaitis and wife Debra of Fort Mill SC; niece Emily Chapman and husband Peter and children Corbett and Edith of Washington DC; and nephew Marc Devokaitis and wife Kate and daughter Audrey of Trumansburg NY.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023 from 3-5 pm at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin at 111 Chamberlain Hwy, Berlin, CT. Burial will be private at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Loon Preservation Committee, 183 Lees Mill Rd, Moultonborough, NH 03254 or the CT Valley Girl Scouts, 340 Washington St, Hartford CT 06106. Judy was many things. Daughter, sister, wife, aunt and teacher. It was as a teacher she inspired countless students to go on and do great things. She challenged her students to be the best they could be, all while also being fair and understanding.

To me, she was Aunt Judy. She loved decorating. I remember going with her and Sarah when we were younger to help decorate her room for the upcoming school year at the end of summer for many years. But her favorite holiday to decorate for was Christmas. One of my fondest memories of her and Uncle Andy is of them putting clues on our Christmas presents. Sarah and I had to guess what the gift was based on these clues. We had three guesses to try and figure out what the present was. Once we got it right, we could open it. Of course, if we didn´t get it right in the three guesses, we still got to open it. But I like to think that was one of her ways to teach us. Not as her students, but as her niece and nephew. All while having some holiday fun.

Judy will be missed by all of us. But we can take solace in knowing she is now at peace alongside her parents, my mother and of course the love of her life, her husband, Uncle Andy.

I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Judy. I know the love her and Andy shared and am happy they are eternally together. To me, Judy was a mentor, a teacher, colleague at Griswold School, but foremost my dear friend. When I came to Griswold School as a fourth grade teacher, I happened to be in Judy´s old classroom in the same grade she had taught and loved. We connected immediately through her endless support, words of wisdom and advice which never steered me wrong as I began and continue my career. Perfect clothes, nails and hair were her signature traits. The dedication and special programs Judy began at Griswold School are remembered on many of the plaques that remain on the walls of Griswold even today. After her retirement, she asked to pledge me in the educational sisterhood of ADK. I would hear of her trips to Hilton head, hear stories of her niece and laugh together about our stories at Griswold. Judy, you are a part of my life that will forever be touched by your kindness, love and beautiful personality. Just a word between us- "corn." - I will miss you greatly.
Blessings sweet Judy.

My deepest sympathy for the loss of Judy. I worked for Judy and Andy when they lived in Spring Lake Village. I cleaned for them. I was working for them when Andy passed. Judy liked to decorate and Andy liked to play golf. So sorry for your loss.
