Judith Lee Keene-Smith

Judith L. (Brown) Keene, affectionately known as Judy, passed away on December 15, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on July 8, 1940, in Pratt, Kansas, Judy lived a life filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to her family and profession. She was a proud graduate of Pratt High School and earned her nursing degree from the Wichita State Wesley School of Nursing in 1962.

Judy dedicated much of her career to nursing, prominently serving as an operating room nurse at Wesley Medical Center, where she met and married Dr. George H. Keene, the father of her children. She went on to work alongside him in his medical office and at The Wichita Clinic, leaving a mark not only with her skills but also with her compassionate spirit. After retirement, Judy embraced a new chapter in her life, becoming an avid traveler and hosting many family gatherings filled with warmth and joy.

To those who knew her, Judy was a woman of exquisite style, always impeccably dressed with perfectly coiffed hair and enchanting aromas of her favorite perfume, Alfred Sung. She had a delightful affinity for scalding hot coffee and burnt toast, often enjoyed with a splash of International Delight coffee. Her home was a sanctuary where the family would gather, and Judy hosted holiday meals that could accommodate as many as 40 guests, filling her home with laughter and wonderful memories.

Her personality was characterized by wit and charm; she had a sharp tongue paired with good manners, always insisting on formal table settings and fine dining. Dancing was one of her passions, with a fondness for jumping up to dance whenever “La Bamba” played. Her grandchildren, whom she adored, were a source of immense pride, and she cherished the time spent with each of them. Whether sharing naps, back rubs, or playful banter, Judy created a loving environment where humor was embraced.

Judy maintained strong friendships throughout her life, forming a cherished bond with her beloved high school friends known as the Magnificent Seven: Francis, Jolene, Henrietta, Ruth, Donna, and Diana. Together, they stood as a testament to enduring friendship. She also found great joy in spending time at Beaver Lake with her dear friend Charlotte Pate, who lovingly tended to her iconic hair.

She is survived by her children, George Keene (Tracy), Traci Atzenweiler (Andy Barney), Mark Keene (Susan), and Todd Keene (Angie); her sister, Jody McRae (Larry); her niece, Erin McRae-Erb (Jeremy); her grandchildren, Kristen Wilson (Jacob), Matthew Keene, Lauren Atzenweiler, Alex Atzenweiler, Karah Hildebrand (Caleb), Zachary Keene, TJ Keene (Kaylee), Jake Atzenweiler, Tanner Keene, and Sam Keene; two great-nieces, Eleanor and Gemma Erb; and her beloved schnauzer, Maggie (affectionately known as RB).

Judy was predeceased by her first husband, Dr. George H. Keene; later married to David Smith; and her infant son, Michael Lawrence Keene.

Her vibrant spirit, kindness, and commitment to family will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A reception to celebrate Judy's life will be held at the Cozine Life Events Center in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, bringing together those who loved her to honor her unforgettable legacy.
