Judith Mates Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Colonial Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 24, 2025.
Judith Mary Mates, age 78, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 17th, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 25, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, to Urban and Bernice (Raupp) Weidner. On November 25, 1967, Judy married the love of her life, David Mates. Together, they shared 57 wonderful years of marriage-a beautiful partnership filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Judy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose warmth, kindness, and joyful spirit touched all who knew her. She was the proud mother of two daughters, Suzanne Day and Heather Harley, and the adoring grandmother of Evan Day, Nicholas Day, and James Harley. Affectionately known as "Silly Grandma" by her grandsons, Judy brought playfulness, humor, and unconditional love into their lives, creating treasured memories that will live on in their hearts. She had a true zest for life and found joy in life's simple pleasures. A lifelong animal lover, Judy had a deep compassion for all creatures and found comfort and companionship in her beloved English Setters. She loved tending to her garden, where she found peace and happiness among the flowers. Her passion for cooking brought family and friends together around the table, where her delicious meals and warm hospitality became the heart of many cherished gatherings. A proud Chicago native, Judy also had a special fondness for football, which included never missing Evan & Nick play on Friday nights as well as cheering on the Chicago Bears Defense on Sunday afternoons. Judy will be remembered for her kind heart, her infectious laughter, and the deep love she shared so freely. Her legacy is one of compassion, joy, and the remarkable gift of making others feel loved, welcomed, and truly seen. She is survived by her loving husband, David Mates; her brothers, Urban Weidner (Fran) and John Weidner (Claire); and her devoted family. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry IL. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1401 N. Richmond Rd. McHenry, Il.
