Judith Peterson, a beloved lifelong resident of San Luis Valley, passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2025, at the age of 80. Judy was born on February 17, 1945, in Monte Vista, Colorado, to Reed and Bertha (Roberts) Whittier. She dedicated her life to her family, community, and faith, leaving a legacy of love and service.
Judy's journey through life was beautifully intertwined with her cherished husband, Ronald E. Peterson. They were united in marriage on February 10, 1962, at the Sargent Community Church, celebrating 63 wonderful years together. She was a devoted member of the Sargent Community Church for over six decades, where her contributions included serving as a choir member and long-time church treasurer. Judy actively supported the community through her involvement with the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and 4-H programs, as well as by attending countless school functions and serving on various committees at Sargent School.
Judy had a passion for outdoor adventure and cherished the moments spent snowmobiling, four-wheeling, and enjoying jeep excursions with family and friends. As a dedicated farmer's wife, her love for her family was paramount, and she nurtured lasting bonds with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Judy will be deeply missed by her husband, Ron, her daughter Lisa (Rick) Robirds of Monte Vista, her son Mark (Michele) Peterson of Monte Vista, and her daughter Tricia (Rodney) Clemens of Scottsdale, Arizona. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kayla (Jarett) Lazor, Bethany (Shea) Williams, Jacob Robirds, Steven Clemens, and Samantha Clemens, along with Micheal, Megan, and Mitchell Peterson. She was proud to be a great-grandmother to Blake and Oliver Lazor and leaves behind her brother Harold (Linda) Whittier, her sister Phyllis Whittier, sister-in-law Darlene Miller, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Melvin and Goldie Peterson, son Greg A. Peterson, sister Reetha B. (Whittier) Henry, and sister-in-law Carolyn Gray.
Judy's family invites all to join them in celebrating her life. A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the Mountain Valley Mortuary in Monte Vista. A Funeral Service to honor Judy will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Sargent Community Church, followed by interment at the Monte Vista Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sargent Community Church or to Hospice Del Valle, in care of the funeral home. Judy's spirit of kindness, commitment to family, and love for her community will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
