William "Willy" Alfonso Maestas, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 6, 2026, in Monte Vista, Colorado, at the age of 91. He was born on February 15, 1935, in La Jara, Colorado, and spent his life embodying the values of hard work, family, and joy.
William spent many fulfilling years as a Maintenance Supervisor at A.E. Staley's Starch Plant, where his dedication and strong work ethic earned him the respect of his peers. He was known for his warm smile and engaging personality, creating connections with everyone he met. His passion for life was reflected in his love for family gatherings, stories of his youth, and the joy he found in fishing, gambling and gardening. He was a devout Catholic all of his life and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He prayed the Rosary daily as an important part of his faith walk.
A devoted family man, William is survived by his daughters, Susan (Frank) DeHerrera, Cathy (Patrick) Sullivan, Valarie Maestas, Kelly (Kim) Maestas, and Joseph Maestas; his brothers, Eugene (Theresa) Maestas and Raymond Maestas; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who cherished him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lugarda, with whom he celebrated 63 wonderful years of marriage, as well as his son, Richard Maestas, an infant son, and siblings Aurelio Maestas, Richard Maestas, Danny Maestas, Adela Martinez, and Josephine Salazar, and his daughter-in-law, Angela Maestas.
William's love for his family was paramount, and he dedicated his life to ensuring their happiness. His sense of humor and storytelling will be profoundly missed, but his loving spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held in his honor, where family and friends will gather to celebrate his life and the joy he brought to those around him. A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday March 13, 2026 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday March 14 also at the church in Monte Vista. Interment will follow services in the Monte Vista Cemetery. We invite all who knew William to join us in remembering the remarkable man he was, and to share in the love and laughter he inspired.
