Judith A. Shiner, 90, formerly of Walnutport, PA, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, at the Commonwealth Senior Living at the Ballentine in Norfolk, VA, under Hospice care. Prior to this, she had been residing with daughter Betsy in VA. She was the wife of the late Douglas C. Shiner, who passed away in 2010. Born in Palmerton on February 23, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Harry J. and Torell (Brennan) Lentz. Early in her career, Judy worked as an Executive Secretary for PP&L in Allentown, PA. Later she was employed by the Walnutport State Bank and was the Income Tax collector for the Borough of Walnutport. Eventually she was hired by the Northern Lehigh School District and became their Earned Income Tax Collector for over 25 years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Slatington and volunteered at the church’s Second Chance Shoppe. Judy was also a former member of the Concourse Club of Palmerton.
She will be lovingly remembered by her sons: Douglas C. Shiner, Jr. and wife Glynis of Galloway, NJ; Gregory J. Shiner of Lehighton; daughters: Betsy L. Shiner and wife Vicki Hunt of Hampton, VA; Melissa J. and husband Todd Evans of Fort Mill, SC. Judy also is survived by her four grandchildren: Dr. Kelsea and husband Dr. George Homan, Austin Shiner, Jarrett Evans, and Zachary Evans; and her sister Carol of VA. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Harry J. Lentz, Jr. (1995). During Judy’s last days, she learned she was going to be a Great Grandmother for the first time.
Those who knew Judy, will remember her zest for life. Never one to complain, she always responded, “I’m Good.” She was certainly a half glass full kind of lady. She just celebrated her 90th Birthday in February in VA with her children, grandchildren, and friends, while nursing a recently broken leg. She always looked forward to gatherings with family and friends. The family will miss her afternoon phone calls with her upbeat spirit and a glass of wine in hand.
Judy and Doug enjoyed spending time at their cabin in the Poconos and traveling with friends. She was known for her great sense of humor and her April Fool’s Day phone calls. Above all she will be remembered for her kindness to others. A friend commented on her passing by referring to her as the best mom in Walnutport.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Harding Funeral Home, 25-27 N. 2nd Street, Slatington PA. Greetings by the family will begin at 10:00 am, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am. Interment will be privately held at the Indianland Cemetery.
