Julia E. Ferguson, a beloved educator and dedicated community member, passed away on February 23, 2026, on her 88th birthday, in Junction City, Kansas. Born on February 23, 1938, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Julia led a life filled with passion for teaching, family, and service.
Julia's journey in education began after she obtained her undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University. She also earned a teaching certificate from Colorado State College and later a Master's degree from Kansas State University. She devoted more than 30 years of her life to teaching elementary school students in various public schools across Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. Beyond the classroom, she provided reading assistance from her home, ensuring that every child had the opportunity to succeed. Julia's commitment to education did not end with retirement; she remained a constant student and educator, always seeking to inspire those around her.
Together with her husband, Al, whom she met while studying at OSU, they shared a beautiful life, marrying on December 27, 1960 during Christmas Break. They enjoyed long road trip vacations, cherishing the time spent visiting family and friends, weaving memories that would last a lifetime.
In her second career, Julia earned her real estate license, teaming up with her husband, Al, to sell residential real estate for 17 years. Their strong partnership in both education and business was a testament to their enduring love and dedication to one another.
Julia was not only a remarkable professional but also a compassionate individual who touched the lives of many. Known for her positive attitude and high energy, she had an innate ability to mentor, check in on, and care for others around her. She volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and actively participated in the Democratic Party and the Retired Teachers Association. Julia's kindness extended to residents of assisted living center, where she frequently delivered flowers, brightening days with her thoughtful gestures. Julia continued to live in her own home, as well as drive herself, both of which kept her active and motivated.
Julia is survived by her daughter Jill Ferguson of Santa Monica, California, and her son Mark A. Ferguson and daughter-in-law Elaine Ferguson of Overland Park, Kansas. She was a proud grandmother to Jessica Ferguson of Scottsdale, Arizona, as well as Elizabeth and Samuel Ferguson, both of Overland Park, Kansas, along with their mother, Suzanne Pope Ferguson. Her family also includes step-grandson Michael O. Sinn, in addition to numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her loving and supportive husband Alvin Ferguson on January 16, 2023, after 62 years of marriage, her sister Linda, and her brother Richard. Julia's legacy of teaching, kindness, and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
Cremation has taken place and burial will take place in her hometown of Sand Springs, Oklahoma. A memorial celebration of life service will be planned in the near future.
