Julia Hall Obituary

JULIA ELISABETH RAMBERG HALL, 88, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, died on September 4, 2025, at Goodwin House in Alexandria, VA.

She was born on July 25, 1936, in Charlotte, NC, the daughter of Walter Gustav Charles Ramberg and Julia Elisabeth Lineberger Ramberg. She studied art history and Italian at Bryn Mawr College, a foundation that nurtured a lifelong love of art and of Italy.

In 1963, Julia, a North Carolina girl and Walter Vance Hall, a Virginia boy happened to meet in Naples, Italy and ended up marrying in Rome. Their partnership carried them through postings abroad in South Korea, Italy, Fiji, and Austria during his Foreign Service career. She was his steadfast companion through their travels, while also raising their two sons with devotion.

Once her children were grown, she returned to the workplace, holding positions at the Smithsonian Institution and later as an assistant to the Librarian of Congress. She also gave generously of her time tutoring children in the Alexandria public schools, a pursuit she and Vance shared for many years. Julia was long connected to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Alexandria, where she sang in the choir for years and served on the vestry.

Julia and Vance had an abiding love of Italy, to which they returned often, relishing the art, language, and culture together. They also took great joy in welcoming family and friends into their Alexandria home, where dinner parties and delicious meals were served amid the art, antiques, and treasures collected on their journeys. Above all, Julia treasured her family and delighted in doting on her two grandsons.

She is survived by her sons, John Ramberg Hall (and wife Denise Ann Hall) of Hackettstown, NJ, and Walter Vance Hall III of Hackettstown, NJ, as well as two grandsons, Lleyton Vance Hall and Anders John Hall. She was predeceased by her husband of sixty years, Walter Vance Hall.

A Liturgy in Thanksgiving for her life will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Alexandria, at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025.
