JACKSONVILLE - Julia "Julie" Rives Hoverman passed away Monday, January 6, 2025 at her home. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC at 2:00 PM.
Julie was born on May 9, 1957, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina but grew up in the neighboring town of Enfield. Julie graduated from Enfield Academy in 1975 and attended Central Carolina Technical Institute from which she earned a diploma in Radio-Television Broadcasting. In 1976 she received a Radio Telephone Third Class Operator Permit from the FCC and worked for the country music radio station WBZB in Smithfield, NC.
She married Lewis Hoverman on May 31, 1980. They went on to have two children, Louanne and Megan. Julie worked with H & R Block as a tax preparer since 1989.
Julie was preceded by her parents; Julian William and Mary Alice Davis Rives, brother, Timothy Davis Rives, and best friend of 48 years, Jennifer Jean Johnson.
An animal lover from an early age, she was happy to provide a loving home for stray cats, starting with Pixie and Dixie when she was about 8 years old. She is survived by cats Harry and Charlie. Julie also loved hummingbirds and especially enjoyed watching them at feeders outside her kitchen window.
Also from an early age, she developed a love for camping and started in the back of her parent's truck. Julie has camped all over the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains.
Julie was a Duke Blue Devils fan, and could be found many game days perched on a bar stool cheering them on.
Survivors include daughters, Louanne Hoverman of Durham, NC and Megan Hoverman of Summerville, SC. Julie's brother John Rives, and sister-in law, both of Durham, as well as her ex-husband Lewis Hoverman of Summerville, SC survive.
