Julia Shubert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Laskin Road Chapel on Feb. 3, 2026.
Julia Newman Shubert passed away on January 28, 2026. She was born on March 17, 1954, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Nell Bateman Newman and Lloyd Kelland Newman.

Julia was reunited in heaven with her parents, her brothers, Luke and Harry Newman; and her loving partner of over 30 years, William "Bill" Albertson.

The third of four children, Julia's early years were shaped by family, faith, and learning. She held fond memories of her upbringing in the family home on Regent Road, which she always remembered as a place filled with laughter, mischief, and love. She attended Blessed Sacrament School in Norfolk, Virginia, and later Carolton Oaks School (now Norfolk Collegiate), where she formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Julia went on to study at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, North Carolina, a chapter she cherished for time spent with her uncle Harry and grandparents. She later studied religion at Virginia Wesleyan College. Julia worked with her family at Greenwich Supply in Virginia Beach before dedicating herself to raising her own family.

Those close to Julia knew she treasured her family roots. She held a deep appreciation for both the Bateman and Newman families in which she was raised, as well as the broader family history she carefully preserved, including ancestral ties to the Skinner, Bessent, Woodson, and Monteiro families. That love of family carried forward into her own life. Julia took immense joy in her sons, Carl Jr. and Mark, and found her greatest happiness delighting in her four grandchildren, Edward, Luke, Wyonne, and Yohanna, whom she adored in her special role as "Grandmommy."

Throughout her life, Julia found comfort in quiet reflection and prayer. A devoted member of her prayer group, she was generous in her support of Catholic ministries and attentive to the needs of others. Her spiritual life was an evolving journey, shaped by both Catholic and Quaker traditions, and grounded in compassion and empathy.

She is survived by her sons, Carl Jr.(Emily) and Mark (Meredith); Bill's daughter, Taylor (Matt); and her four beloved grandchildren, Edward, Luke, Wyonne, and Yohanna. She is also survived by her sister, Charlotte Hauck (Don); sisters-in-law, Jolyn Newman and Kathy Newman; nieces and nephews, Beverly (Paul), Lloyd, Harry Jr., Matthew, Robert, and Nell; Bill's grandchildren, Rowyn and Grayson; and many extended family members and dear friends.

A private service will be held with family. Julia's family is deeply grateful for the love, prayers, and support they have received from friends and community during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of the Holy Family or the National Kidney Foundation, causes Julia would have deeply appreciated.
