Julie Ann Agee, age 74, of Jefferson City, Mo. passed away Sunday, October 8, 2023, at Capital Region Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Julie was born on August 16, 1949, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of Max and Betty (Eccher) Bassinson. She was married on July 31, 1993, in Jefferson City, Mo. to Robert V. Agee, who survives.
Julie attended McClure High School and was a 1967 graduate of Ladue Horton-Watkins High School in Ladue, Mo. After graduation, she attended the University of Missouri in Columbia and studied philosophy.
A deeply personal tragedy marked Julie's life when her father was tragically robbed and killed by juvenile offenders in St. Louis. This experience fueled her lifelong dedication to ensuring equitable treatment for juveniles within the justice system. Her impactful career spanned an impressive 30 years as the Executive Director of the Missouri Juvenile Justice Association, concluding with her retirement in 2006. Throughout her career, Julie was instrumental in pioneering numerous programs, including the CASA program, and collaborated with the Missouri Restaurant Association and KRCG to champion the "Adopt a Kid" program. This month-long effort brought numerous foster children into loving, permanent families. Her tireless efforts continue to shape the protocols governing the treatment of youth within the court system to this day.
Julie's legacy extends beyond her professional achievements. She was a remarkable individual, celebrated for her artistic talents and free-spirited nature. Her creative nature found expression in various projects, and she embraced the role of an art teacher, imparting her passions to others. Each year, she crafted personalized Christmas cards and ornaments, bringing joy to her family and friends.
Julie loved traveling with family and spending quality time with them. She took on the role of Grandma Julie with her whole heart and spirit and made it her mission to know everything she could about her grandson, Keegan, despite the physical distance between them. Her quirky personality and fun nature earned her the title of "The Cool Grandma."
She would walk into a room smiling and the room would smile with her. She had a youthful sense of wonder and excitement about the world and all its treasures. She loved to laugh and did so easily with great abandon. Oddly, she was a somewhat shy person, but she could be an ardent and protective friend. Always wanting to feel free, an afternoon drive with the top down always put a smile on her face.
Survivors include: her loving husband, Rob Agee; one son, Matthew Cole (Sara) of Richmond, Tx.; one grandson, Keegan Cole of Richmond, Tx.; two brothers, Kevin Bassinson (David Carroll) of Los Angeles, Ca. and Jeff Bassinson (Victoria) of Jefferson City, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Scott Bassinson; nephew, Max David Bassinson; parents-in-law, Vernon and Pat Agee; and her beloved cat, Cosmo.
A private family service will be held to remember Julie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the United Way of Central Missouri by mailing all donations to P.O. Box 95, Jefferson City, Mo. 65102.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary, 915 Madison St, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
