June Ackerman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rose Funeral & Cremation - Mann on Mar. 3, 2026.
Saturday, February 28, 2026, Jesus called June Thurman Ackerman home after 98 years and she answered peacefully "It is Well With my Soul". She joins her mother and father Herbert and Jesse Thurman, her beloved stepmother Bessie Thurman, brother Herbert Allen and sister DeLois Kerr on the streets of gold.

June was born August 27, 1927, and grew up in Chattanooga TN. She began her career in radio but her passion was fashion. She followed her dream for over 50 years starting as a clerk at Loveman's, to buyer for the French Room at Miller Bros. and retiring as Vice President of Proffit's Department Store. Her career allowed her to travel the world and she throughly enjoyed her life.

June was married to Julius Hobbs in 1958, and they resided in Chattanooga TN . Julius passed in 1989 and June moved to Maryville TN. Some years later she met Dr. Ora Ackerman (deceased in 2018) and they were married in 1997. They built a wonderful life together for 21 years filled with family, church, friends, love and travel.

June and Ora attended West Emory Presbyterian Church in Knoxville. The church has been a great comfort to June during her homebound years. Their visits, cards, calls and prayers made her feel loved and missed.

June served on many boards and committees for the arts and philanthropic causes in Chattanooga, Knoxville and Maryville. She strongly believed in giving back. Chilhowee Club of Maryville and its lovely members were dear to her heart.

June is survived by her niece Linda Stooksbury (Kenneth), stepdaughter Cindy Ackerman (Tim, Nikki, Jayden), great-nieces Jill Fairbanks (Todd, Jasmine), Jami Aylor (Joseph, Maci, Riley, Jackson). she leaves faithful friends Doug and Teresa Horn, George and Dianne Cserbak, Kim Emery and neighbors at Royal Oaks.

Special thanks to Annie Goodwin and her family for loving and caring for June the past 4 years. Gentiva Hospice was wonderful to work with. Many thanks to Lisa, Angie and Rebecca.

To honor June's wishes no public service is planned. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to West Emory Presbyterian Church 1035 Emory Church Rd Knoxville TN 37922 or Chilhowee Club PO Box 4335 Maryville TN 37802.
