June Roseland Obituary

June Roseland
March 23, 2025
Yvonne June Roseland, 94, of Seneca, peacefully left us to work in her Eternal Garden, Sunday, March 23, 2025, at home surrounded by her family.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 4, 2025, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Faulkton, SD, with Fr. John Short presiding. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, Faulkton. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 3, at the church, with visitation one hour prior.
Yvonne June Heinzen was born to Joe and Rose Heinzen on July 19, 1930, in a house in Highmore, SD. She came into this world right behind her twin sister, Lavonne Joyce. They lived on three different farms in Hyde and Faulk County. When they were six years old, they moved to their homestead 23 miles north of Highmore. There they were joined by a brother, Bernard, and two sisters, Karen and Lois. June attended her first eight grades at Rice Lake Country School, getting there by walking or on horseback. On her way home in a blizzard one year, she lost her gloves and suffered frostbite which resulted in her seldom needing to use potholders in her later years. She shared many stories of growing up, one of which was her and Joyce walking miles carrying lunch and a fresh drink of water to their parents while they worked in the fields.
She attended high school in Highmore, graduating in 1948. She enrolled at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and received her teaching certificate. While there she took an art class and sharpened her drawing skills which resulted in some amazing works. She taught for one year at Banner Country School in northern Hyde County. We were told by one of her students that the kids would tease her as she would stand on her tiptoes to peek out the window at the Roseland Ranch to see if she could catch a glimpse of Stan. They had previously caught each other's eye when Stan was doing custom field work for her father, Joe.
They were married on June 4, 1949, in Faulkton, making their home in a tiny house on the family farm. In 1953 they built a new house on their homestead where she lived until the time of her death. She worked side by side with Stan for over 58 years. After his death in 2007, she continued to work on the farm, never missing a morning of opening gates for the feed wagon. She also helped with all kinds of cattle work into her late 80's. She would stand at the chute taking numbers all day and then go home and meticulously work on the cattle books. Never one to waste "free time", in 2005 she started helping at the lodge. She washed supper dishes nightly for 90 days each hunting season for several years. She was loved by both staff and hunters. Every spring she looked forward to planting flowers and her garden. Most years she would put in over 100 tomato plants as well as many other vegetables and shared the harvest and canned goods with family and friends. Her love of gardening was only surpassed by the love she had for spending time with her grandkids and great-grandkids. She gave each one time and attention as she taught them an outstanding work ethic and sometimes a new word or two. They will truly miss her.
She is survived by her three children: Julene (John) Cass of Huron, Steve (Deb) Roseland of Seneca and Twyla (Ken) Bartholomew of Fort Pierre; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; her twin sister, Joyce DuBois of Edina, MN; and sisters, Karen Richards of Rapid City and Lois (Ken) Brunsvold of Bloomington, MN; and sister-in-law, Patty Hansen of Faulkton.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Stan; parents, Joe and Rose Heinzen; grandson, Joseph Cass; son-in-law, Larry Huss; brother, Bernard Heinzen; brothers-in-law: Don DuBois, Bill Richards, Lester Hansen, Bud Lahren; and sisters-in-law, Beulah Barrett and Beverly Lahren.
