June Schaefer passed away the morning of June 2, 2025 in her home after a short aggressive bout of cancer. The world has lost a beautiful, kind, elect soul and the heavens are rejoicing at her return home.
June was born in Springfield, Missouri the 27th of July 1937. She was the seventh of nine children of Leonard and Josephine McKeel. She married her sweet husband Henry D. Schaefer on September 10, 1957. Hank and June had five children that she loved very much.
June is survived by her husband Henry (Hank) Schaefer, all five of her children, Cindy McCormack (Fred), Ron Schaefer (Ralynn), Sharon Fox (Dave), Kristin Schaefer, Darin Schaefer (Grace); her eighteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren with two more due in the next few months. She is also survived by her sister Lorene Shafer, brother Don McKeel, and sister Diane McKeel.
June was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all her life. She loved her Heavenly Father and Jesus with all her heart. She felt it a blessing to serve in what ever calling she was given. Her first calling at age fourteen was to be the music director in her branch in Springfield. She has had callings as a teacher in all of the auxiliaries, held leadership positions in both Young Women and the Relief Society.
June worked in various jobs during her life from a dog kennel, dry cleaners, reading newspapers for Barrell, department manager at ZCMI's to working in the medical field as an office manager for an OB/GYN office and lastly as an insurance facilitator in a medical clinic. There were other jobs and positions she held but her favorite ones were those where she could help others.
June loved music and singing. She played the drums in band in Jr. High and High School as well as sang in the school choirs. She directed the music in the different organizations in the church for many years and sang in the church choir for most of her life. A stroke nearly eight years ago took away her ability to sing, which was a great sadness to her. Some of her other favorite things to do in life were reading, she was an avid reader; sewing, making quilts for her family. She loved gardening and spent hours every week in the spring and summer working in her yard. She loved her friends and enjoyed spending time having fun adventures with them. Mostly, she loved attending the temple which she did nearly every week for the last several years of her life.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her husband Hank. June and Hank would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this upcoming September. They loved each other more every year they were together. They look forward to being together for the eternities with their family.
June was preceded in death by her parents Leonard and Josephine McKeel, brother Bill McKeel, and sisters Kathleen Berg, Irene Vanderhoof, Gerry Berbert, and Bertha Curtis.
She never met a stranger and will be missed by all who knew her, but mostly by her family who loved her best.
