Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greely Funeral Home on Apr. 26, 2024.
June Elizabeth Sutherland passed away at the Port healthcare facility in Newburyport, after
heroically enduring a long illness of Parkinson's disease.
June was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years Vincent A Sutherland. They
shared a home on Wheeler's Point that they built together and raised a family of six children.
One of which predeceased her was her oldest son, David Sutherland.
June was born in Gloucester to Ralph and Edna Gibbs and grew up in the family home on
Hartz Street. Known as "dreamy" she graduated Gloucester high school and was a member of
several clubs during her attendance. The Girls Rifle Team, Art club and Service club, to name a
few.
After high school she went on to be a telephone operator for Ma Bell, during which time she
met Vincent from a blind date. She worked there until her fourth child was born and became a
homemaker. In which time she helped manage the menagerie her and Vincent created with
goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and a pig, not to mention honeybees. She was a generous and
caring woman. She even took in a poor child during the summer to foster.
When she was reintroduced to figure skating at O'Maley Middle School she became
involved in the beginning of organizing the Cape Ann Figure Skating club. Later she went to
Essex Agricultural school to study and become a Home Health aide which was handy as she
could also care for her ailing mother-in-law.
She also worked briefly at Gorton's and sought out a better career as a pharmacy technician
at Addison Gilbert Hospital. When she finally retired, her and her husband were able to travel.
They enjoyed sailing, walks on the beach, trips to their camp in Maine and visiting family in
California in Florida. She always enjoyed listening to music and dancing with Vincent.
When her illness immobilized her, she took to painting with Bob Ross videos and visited the
Rose Baker Center with her dear sister in-law, Mary.
June was loved tremendously by those she leaves her daughters, Dawn Carpenter wife of
