Junith Joanne Comstock was born on November 15, 1937, to Edward and Zola (Brucker) Gunderson on the family farm near Odebolt. She attended school in Odebolt and graduated with the Class of 1955. Following graduation, she worked for attorney George Dresselhuis.
On September 18, 1956, Junith was united in marriage to Merritt Comstock at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. The couple made their first home near Arcadia and were blessed with three sons. Over the years, they lived near Kiron, Denison, and north of Boyer before moving in 1974 to Junith’s parents’ farm near Odebolt. In 1983, they settled at their home place near Boyer, where they continued raising their family and enjoyed their life together. She and Merritt were longtime members of a neighborhood card club and enjoyed Saturday night dances.
Once her boys were grown, Junith returned to the workforce, employed with the Dresselhuis-Heidenreich attorney office until her retirement in 2015 due to health issues.
In retirement, Junith enjoyed playing cards—especially Euchre, Pinochle, and pennies—and gathering with friends. She was well known for her delicious pies, particularly apple, peach, and pecan. Faith and community were central to Junith’s life. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and an active member, serving as past president, of the Odebolt Ladies Auxiliary.
Junith passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Odebolt Specialty Care, having attained the age of 87 years, nine months, and 16 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Zola Gunderson; her husband, Merritt Comstock; and brother-in-law, Jim Ahrens.
She is survived by her sons: Dan (Erin) Comstock, Steve (Cheryl Rath) Comstock, and Doug (Christi) Comstock, all of Denison; three grandchildren: Kaylee, Tyler, and Jacob Comstock; sisters: Josephine (Jerry) Warren of O’Fallon, IL, Janice Ahrens of Fort Worth, TX, and Jeanie (Gene) Kelly of Odebolt; sister-in-law, Sharon Comstock of Manning; along with nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.
Visitation with family greeting friends will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m., also at Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will take place in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison.
