Justin Mason Bell, 39, of Boston, MA, formerly of Montclair, NJ, passed away unexpectedly on May 21, 2025. His passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him-and a lot less wit in the world.
Born on March 18, 1986, and raised in Montclair, New Jersey, Justin was a force of intellect, compassion, and unfiltered commentary.
Justin's academic journey was as bold as his personality. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Sports and Fitness Administration/Management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Then, in a move that stunned his die-hard New York Yankees-loving family, he went on to work for-the Boston Red Sox. (Thanksgiving was never quite the same.) Later, he returned to the classroom, earning his Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University School of Law, sharpening a mind already known for precision, empathy, and debate skills that could leave most opponents speechless.
Professionally, Justin was a powerful advocate for equity and inclusion. Most recently, he served as Director of Nondiscrimination Initiatives and Title IX Coordinator at Wellesley College, where he championed fairness, built thoughtful policy, and offered unwavering support to students and colleagues alike. He was respected not just for his work ethic, but for his ability to approach even the toughest conversations with clarity, compassion, and a perfectly timed quip.
Justin was the friend you called when you needed perspective, pop culture updates, or just someone to sarcastically co-sign your outrage. He could turn a dull moment into a story, a meeting into a mission, and a quick hello into a real conversation. His presence-brilliant, bold, and beautifully his own-will be missed beyond words.
He is survived by his loving parents, Dr. Michael Bell and Dr. Sharon Mason-Bell; his sister Adrienne Butler and brother-in-law Matthew Butler; Uncle Dominick Cousins; cousins Shannon Martin and wife Patrice (children Mackenzie and Ty), Andrew Cousins and wife LaDonna (children Austin and Levi), Derek Cousins and wife Lauren (child Logan), Kenny Cousins; and Aunt Gustavia K. Tirado (children Louis, Gabriel, and Sophia). He also leaves behind a wide circle of extended family, dear friends, and professional peers who admired him deeply and laughed with him often.

Dear Sharon, Michael and Adrienne,

It is truly with heavy hearts that we write this. Know that we share in your grief.

Over the course of the years since we last saw Justin we have thought about him. Alex has filled us in a bit about where he was living, working and law school. Now we learn about his working at Wellesley. What an accomplished man.

Justin has always held a fond place in our memories. We were so glad that he was always a good friend to Alex, and we really enjoyed his visits to our home for playdates, dinners and sleepovers. Always quiet (at least with us) and very polite. He was pleasure to be with.

What a tragic loss this is for you, your family, his friends and all those he touched throughout his life.

In sympathy,

Honey and Howard Solomon

Dear Sharon and Mike,

We are heartbroken to hear about the sudden passing of Justin. Please accept our deepest condolences for your unimaginable loss.

Our son, Seth, always spoke so warmly of "JB" - their friendship was filled with laughter, loyalty, and genuine connection. It´s clear that JB made a meaningful impact on everyone around him, and we know how much he meant to Seth.

We can´t begin to imagine the depth of your grief, but we hope you find some comfort in knowing how loved and admired Justin was. You raised a truly remarkable person, and his memory will live on in all who were fortunate to know him.

Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

With heartfelt sympathy,
Susan & Jeff Hammer

I am so grateful to have so many memories of JB from our time at UMass together. There was truly no one like him and I will miss his laugh the most. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the entire Bell family. May his memory be a blessing.

I am writing to send my condolences to Mike and Sharon, parents of Justin. Sadly, I did not get to know Justin personally, but from knowing his parents, and reading the messages provided, it seems very clear that he was a fine man - as I would expect of Mike and Sharon.
There are no words that truly ease the pain of loss. But please know that this loss is shared. While the passing is unbelievable, the life you shared with him is a real thing and of substance - that does not change. And his gifts to you and to his community will continue to flourish in the warm light of your collective continued love.
Blessings to you. You are in my prayers.

Justin was the voice of Wellesley College Basketball. Walking down the ramp leading into the Fieldhouse, you would hear Justin announcing the starting lineups. It didn't matter than there were only 150 people in the stands. His enthusiasm and style brought energy to the crowd and always, a smile to my face. Justin knew what he did mattered. In all things, it did. This is a really tough loss.

I was fortunate to work with Justin when he was at Northeastern and will always remember his charm, wit and smile that appealed to students and staff alike. He mentored and supported our student-athletes and they loved him. You made a difference for many Justin, you will always be in our hearts and will always be a Husky! Heartfelt condolences and hugs to the Bell family.
